Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (2-3) opened the Colonial Classic with a 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 21-25) loss to Morehead State University (3-2) in Kaplan Arena.
Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Rullan Vilanova led the team with six kills and added three digs and three block assists, while freshman setter
Salma Gonzalez led the team with 12 assists and second with five kills and five digs.
Outside hitter
Jennifer Rosado led the team with seven digs, while freshman libero
Leiri Melendez added five digs. Junior middle blocker
Charlinda Colbert added four kills and senior setter
Alee Quint added eight assists.
After the Lady Tigers scored the first point of the match to take a 1-0 set lead, Morehead State scored the next five points to take a four-point lead, 5-1, forcing a Savannah State timeout. After the timeout, SSU scored six of the next 10 points to close the gap within two points, 9-7, forcing a Morehead State timeout. MSU outscored SSU 16-11 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
With the second frame tied at four, Savannah State scored the next two points to take a two-point lead, 6-4, but Morehead State scored the next three points to take a point lead, 7-6. The Lady Tigers scored the next four points to take a three-point lead, 10-7, forcing a Morehead State timeout. After the timeout, MSU outscored SSU 18-4 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Lady Tigers scored four of the first five points in the final stanza to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but the Eagles scored 15 of the next 20 points to take a seven-point lead, 16-9. Savannah State scored the next three points to close with four points, 16-12, but Morehead State scored eight of the next 14 points to increase its lead to six points, 24-18. Facing match point, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to pull within three points, 24-21, but an Eagle kill gave MSU the set win and the match win.
The Eagles were led by Lauren Rokey with 13 kills, Jordan Jones with 36 assists and Danielle McCarson with 12 digs and four services aces.
The Lady Tigers finish the tournament with a doubleheader Saturday with Davidson College at 10 a.m. and host College of William & Mary at 12:30 p.m.
