Volleyball Travels to Virginia for the Colonial Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University volleyball team continues the season in Williamsburg, Va., with the Colonial Classic this weekend.
 
The Lady Tigers (2-2) start the tournament with a single match Friday against Morehead State University (2-2) and a doubleheader Saturday against Davidson College (2-1) and host College of William & Mary (1-3). 
 
Savannah State started the season 2-1 at the SWAC/MEAC Challenge winning the final two matches of the tournament against Alabama A&M (3-0) and Grambling State University (3-2) after falling to Alabama State University (3-0).  The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to the University of North Florida 3-0 Friday. 
 
Junior middle blocker Charlinda Colbert leads the team with 1.80 kills per set, 18 kills, but junior outside hitter Jennifer Rosado leads the team with 24 kills, 1.71 kills per set, while freshman middle blocker Tyran Chenault is averaging 1.36 kills and 1.00 blocks. 
 
Senior setter Alee Quint leads the team with 4.14 assists per set, while freshman Salma Gonzalez averages 2.86 assists and 1.86 digs per set and freshman libero Leiri Melendez leads the team with 3.93 digs per set. 
 
Morehead State went 2-1 at the Eagle Challenge with wins over Delaware State University (3-0) and Winthrop (3-2), but fell to Youngstown State (3-0) and to Marshall (3-0) earlier in the week.  The Eagles are led by Jordan Jones with 2.43 kills per set, Chandler Clark with 9.57 assists per set and Danielle McCarson with 3.93 digs per set. 
 
Davidson started the season with back-to-back wins against Appalachian State (3-2) and Loyola (3-0), but fell to UNC Wilmington (3-1) in the final match of the UNCW Invitational.  The Wildcats are led by Mason Rooney with 3.25 kills per set, Sydney Champaigne with 5.67 assists per set and Elise Edman with 4.83 digs per set. 
 
William & Mary has lost all three matches in straight sets and defeated Georgia State University 3-1.  The Tribe is led by Sydney Biniak with 3.31 kills per set, Autumn Brenner with 5.38 assists per set and Katie Turner with 3.31 digs per set. 
 
The Lady Tigers head to Jacksonville, Fla., for a midweek match against the University of North Florida Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to Williamsburg, Va., for the William & Mary Invitational from Sept. 1-2.  SSU starts with Morehead State University Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday with Davidson College at 10 a.m. and host College of William & Mary at 12:30 p.m.
