SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (2-1) travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for a midweek match against the University of North Florida (2-1) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Tigers are coming off a 2-1 record last weekend at the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Montgomery, Ala., to begin the 2017 season for the best three-match start since 2014.
After dropping the season opener to host Alabama State University 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 12-25), Savannah State won the next two matches against Alabama A&M University 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-20) and to Grambling State University 3-2 (25-14, 18-25, 15-25, 25-16, 15-8).
The Lady Tigers have won back-to-back matches for the first time since opening the 2014 season with back-to-back wins against Brewton-Parker College and Fort Valley State University. The straight set win against AAMU was the first against a Division I opponent and the first since defeating Tougaloo College on Sept. 19, 2014.
Junior outside hitter
Jennifer Rosado leads the team with 19 kills, an average of 1.73 kills per set, while junior middle blocker
Charlinda Colbert is second with 16 kills, but leads the team with 2.00 kills per set, and freshman middle blocker
Tyran Chenault averages 1.36 kills and 0.91 blocks.
Senior setter
Alee Quint leads the team with 4.09 assists per set, while freshman setter
Salma Gonzalez is averaging 3.36 assists, 0.91 kills and 1.55 digs. Freshman libero
Leiri Melendez, who was named the MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week Monday, leads the team with 4.27 digs per set, which ranks fourth in the conference and with 0.55 service aces per set, which ranks tied for second in the MEAC with teammate freshman defensive specialist
Chara Robbins.
North Florida opened the Gamecock Invitational with back-to-back 3-2 wins over Troy University and Mercer University, but fell to host University of South Carolina 3-0. Carina Hoff leads the team with 2.38 kills per set, while Madilyn McCarty leads with 6.54 assists per set and Ashley Laborde leads with 2.77 digs per set.
The Lady Tigers travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the Colonial Classic and starts with a single match Friday against Morehead State at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday with Davidson College at 10 a.m. and host College of William & Mary at 12:30 p.m.
