SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State remained winless in conference play after losing a double-header to Bethune-Cookman in games played at Tiger Field.
SSU lost the first game 8-4 and suffered a tough 1-0 setback in the second contest.
In the opener, B-CU scored six runs in the top of the third off three hits.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers produced one run.
Mason Calloway walked and
Bernard Barnes was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Jacob Lightle hit into a double play which allowed Calloway to advance to third base.
Jalen Atterbury hit a double down the left field line which brought home Calloway to make the score 6-1.
SSU added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to pull within 6-4.
In the fourth,
Jorge Lopez reached on an error. The next batter,
Kyle Gerdts, tripled down the right field line and scored on an error by the right fielder.
Atterbury led off the fifth with a double up the middle. After a flyout by
Bryce Luken, Atterbury stole third and scored on an error by the catcher.
Jameel Edney hit a RBI single for Bethune-Cookman in the sixth and Chase DeBonis scored on a balk in the ninth to secure a 8-4 win for the visitors from Daytona Beach, Florida.
Trevor McKenna started the game for the Tigers and took the loss. McKenna lasted 2.2 innings and gave up four hits, six runs and three walks while striking out two.
Atterbury had three hits for SSU.
As a team, Savannah State had four hits, made two errors and left five men on base.
Josten Heron had three hits for the Wildcats. Anthony Maldonado earned the win while TJ Densmore got the save. Maldonado pitched five innings and gave up four hits, four runs and four walks while recording three strikeouts. Densmore pitched four innings and issued two walks while striking out four.
B-CU had 12 hits in the game but had three errors and left 14 men on base.
In the second game, Tyler Norris pitched a no-hitter, striking out five and walking two batters for Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats (21-13, 8-3 MEAC) scored the only run in the game in the top of the seventh.
Heron flied out to the center fielder for the first out. Demetrius Sims and Kyle Corbin hit back to back singles to put runners on first and second. Edney reached on a fielder's choice. During the play, Corbin was out at second but Sims advanced to third and scored on a error by the Tigers second baseman which proved to be the game winner.
Danny Rodriguez had three hits for B-CU while Corbin added two hits.
The Wildcats ended the game with nine hits while leaving nine men on base.
Austin Robinson took the loss for Savannah State (9-23, 0-11 MEAC). Robinson struck out two, walked two while giving up nine hits and one run.
The Tigers left four men on base.
