Softball Sweeps Doubleheader against South Carolina State Saturday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University softball team (3-35, 3-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) swept the doubleheader against South Carolina State University (2-37, 2-12 MEAC) with an 8-0 win in five innings in game one and a 10-8 win in game two at the Lady Tiger Softball Field Saturday.
 
Senior right fielder Alexis Singleton batted .714 (5-for-7) with four runs scored, two triples and four RBIs, while junior center fielder Shelby Eccles batted .429 (3-for-7) with two runs scored and two RBIs, while senior left fielder Chasney Jenkins, sophomore first baseman Elizabeth Humes and junior shortstop Brianna Harris each batted .400 (2-for-5), while Harris scored three times with two RBIs and Humes scored twice with two RBIs.
 
Savannah State 8, South Carolina State 0 (5) (Game One)
Singleton led SSU going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Humes and Eccles went 2-for-3 and Humes added a run scored and three RBIs and Eccles added a run scored and two RBIs.  On the mound, senior pitcher Amanda McDowell (2-17) picked up the win pitching a complete game scattering two hits with eight strikeouts. 
 
Savannah State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning with a run to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning after Eccles singled to right field to drive home Singleton, who started the inning with a single through the left side.
 
The Lady Tigers had an opportunity to score more runs in the second inning, but left the bases loaded with no outs to keep the SSU lead at 1-0 after the second inning.  Savannah State scored a run in the third inning after Humes homered to left field on a 1-2 count for a 2-0 lead.
 
Savannah State scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead after four innings.  After a groundout and a foul out to begin the inning, Singleton tripled to center field on the first pitch, followed by Eccles RBI single to first base to drive home Singleton for a 3-0 lead.  Eccles stole second and Harris walked on four pitches.  Humes doubled up the middle to drive home Eccles and Harris for a 5-0 lead, but a pop up ended the inning.
 
The Lady Tigers ended the game with three runs in the fifth inning for the eight run win.  Jenkins started the inning with a single up the middle and junior second baseman Drea Lesure doubled to center field to drive home Jenkins for a 6-0 lead.  After a groundout for the first out and to move Lesure to third, sophomore designated player Allye Sneed hit a bunt single to the catcher and stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.  Singleton singled up the middle to drive home Lesure and Sneed for the final play of the game.
 
South Carolina State's best chances to score was in the first inning when SCSU left runners on first and second and in the third inning when the Bulldogs left runners on first and second. 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Megan Prunty and Justine Zepeda with a hit each, while Unique Whitehurst (0-2) picked up the loss pitching the first inning giving up a run on two hits.  Ragin Prunty pitched the final 3.1 innings giving up seven runs on eight hits in relief. 
 
Savannah State 10, South Carolina State 8 (Game Two)
Singleton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Harris went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs and sophomore third baseman Cortni Jones added two RBIs.  On the mound, sophomore pitcher Faith Dickerson (1-15) picked up her first win of the season pitching a complete game giving up four earned runs on six hits.
 
South Carolina State broke a scoreless tie in the top of the first inning with a run after an error allowed a run to score, but the Lady Tigers bounced back scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead after the first inning. 
 
Singleton started the inning with a single through the right side and stole second.  After a pop up for the first out of the inning, Harris singled up the middle to drive home Singleton and advanced to third on the throw to tie the game at one.
 
 Humes was hit by a pitch and stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.  Jones hit an RBI groundout to third base to drive home Harris to take a 2-1 lead, Jenkins singled up the middle to drive home Humes for a 3-1 lead, but a fly out to right field ended the inning. 
 
Savannah State added two runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead after the second inning.  Dickerson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch and freshman designated player Alysha Bolling doubled to left center field to drive home Dickerson for a 4-1 lead.  A pop up double play erased Bolling from second, but Eccles singled to the pitcher on a bunt and stole second.  Harris singled to right field to drive home Eccles for a 5-1 lead, but a fly out ended the inning. 
 
South Carolina State answered with two runs in the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3 after a two-run home run to left field, but the Lady Tigers scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 6-3 after an error allowed Jenkins to score and SSU left the bases loaded.
 
Savannah State scored three runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to 9-3 after five innings.  After a fly out and a groundout to start the inning, McDowell walked and sophomore catcher Kelsey Cyrus singled down the left field line and Singleton nearly missed a home run hitting the top of the fence in right field and settled for a two-run triple to drive home McDowell and Cyrus for an 8-3 lead and scored on a wild pitch for a 9-3 lead. 
 
South Carolina State added five runs in the seventh inning to cut the final deficit to two runs after a two-run home run to left field and a three-run home run to left field. 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Kaneisha Pettiford going 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Jada Lake and Whitehurst each added two runs.  On the mound, Lake (0-16) picked up the loss, pitching a complete game giving up nine earned runs on nine hits. 
 
The Lady Tigers play the season finale Sunday at noon for Senior Day at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
