SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (0-27, 0-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina Central University (8-22, 3-3 MEAC) 4-3 in the series finale Sunday at Lady Tiger Softball Field.
The Lady Tigers left four runners on base in the final two innings and left nine runners on base during the game.
Junior center fielder
Shelby Eccles went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore first baseman
Elizabeth Humes went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. On the mound, senior pitcher
Amanda McDowell (0-11) picked up the loss pitching a complete game giving up three earned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Savannah State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead after the first after Humes singled through the right side to drive home senior right fielder
Alexis Singleton.
The Eagles tied the game at one with a run in the fifth inning after a sacrifice fly to drive home an Eagle and scored three runs in the sixth inning after a two-run home run to center field and a solo home run to left field to take a 4-1 lead in the middle of the sixth inning.
Savannah State pushed across one run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-2. Humes started the inning reaching on an error and sophomore third baseman
Cortni Jones was hit by a pitch and McDowell singled to load the bases with no outs.
Eccles singled up the middle to drive home Humes, but junior shortstop
Drea Lesure reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher as the pitcher threw home to get the lead runner of Jones for the first out. After a foul out for the second out, Eccles was picked off at second to end the inning.
The Eagles went 1-2-3 in the seventh inning and the Lady Tigers scored the final run in the seventh inning to cut the final deficit to a run.
After a ground, senior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Harris singled to right field to drive home Jenkins and advance to second on the throw. After a groundout for the second out, Jones was hit by a pitch and a groundout to the shortstop ended the game.
The Eagles were led by Lauren Sitterson going 2-for-4, while Ava Dolan picked up two RBIs. On the mound, Dominique Wilson (7-11) picked up her third win of the series pitching the first six innings giving up two unearned runs on seven hits, while Sitterson picked up her first save of the season pitching the final inning giving up one run on one hit.
The Lady Tigers take a week off before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., to face the Southern Division Leader Florida A&M University.
