JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Savannah State University softball team (1-31) fell to Jacksonville University (25-19) 14-3 in five innings in game one and 17-1 in five innings in game two Wednesday at the Pruitt Softball Complex.
Freshman right fielder
Ashleigh Dennis led the team batting .500 (2-for-4), while sophomore pitcher
Elizabeth Humes batted .400 (2-for-5) with a run scored.
Jacksonville 14, Savannah State 3 (5) (Game One)
Senior pitcher
Amanda McDowell went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman second baseman
Alysha Bolling went 1-for-2 with an RBI. On the mound, McDowell (1-14) picked up the loss pitching the first inning giving up five runs on four hits.
Savannah State had an opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the top of the first inning. Senior center fielder
Alexis Singleton started the game with a single up the middle on the first pitch, followed by junior third baseman
Drea Lesure's sacrifice bunt to advance Singleton to second and senior left fielder Chansey Jenkins sacrificed Singleton to third, but a foul out to the pitcher ended the inning.
Jacksonville scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead after an RBI walk and a grand slam to center field and added six runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead after two RBI singles, a Dolphin stole home, an RBI groundout, and a two-run single.
The Lady Tigers got on the board in the fourth inning by scoring three runs to cut the lead to 11-3. Jenkins started the inning with an infield single, followed by Humes' single to right field. McDowell doubled to right field to drive home Jenkins to cut the lead to 11-1 and put runners on second and third with no outs.
After a groundout, for the first out of the inning, sophomore catcher
Kelsey Cyrus reached on an error by the shortstop to drive home Humes to cut the lead to 11-2. Bolling hit an RBI single to left field to drive home McDowell to cut the lead to 11-3, but a strikeout and a foul out to third base ended the inning.
Jacksonville scored the final three runs in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single, a fielder's choice to second base to allow a Dolphin to score and a sacrifice fly.
The Dolphins were led by Makenzie Buss going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and six RBIs, while Carolyn O'Neal, Allie McCourt and Heather Roberts each added two hits. Alyssa Bilodeau (8-6) picked up the win in a complete game giving up three runs on six hits.
Jacksonville 17, Savannah State 1 (Game Two)
Humes, Dennis and sophomore shortstop
Allye Sneed each recorded a hit, while Singleton recorded the lone RBI and Bolling scored the only run. On the mound, Humes (0-1) picked up the loss in a complete game giving up 11 earned runs.
Jacksonville scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 9-0 lead after a two-run single to left field, an RBI double, three fielding errors to score three runs, a two-run single to left center and an RBI double.
The Dolphins scored seven runs in the second inning to take a 16-0 lead after back-to-back RBI doubles, two RBI singles, a two-run double and an RBI single and scored another run in the fourth inning to take a 17-0 after an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Lady Tigers scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning after Singleton groundout to second base to drive home Bolling.
The Dolphins were led by Roberts going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs, while Danielle Baker and Bethany Kursch each recorded three hits. On the mound, Madison Ragan (6-4) pitched a complete game giving up one unearned run on three hits.
The Lady Tigers continue Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with North Carolina A&T State University this weekend in Greensboro, N.C. The two schools square off in a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at noon.
