GREENSBORO, N.C. – A walkoff grand slam by the North Carolina A&T State University softball team (12-26, 5-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) capped a six-run seventh inning in a 10-9 comeback victory against Savannah State University (1-30, 1-9 MEAC) at Aggie Softball Complex Friday.
Sophomore third baseman
Cortni Jones went 4-for-4 with a run scored, three RBIs, while sophomore first baseman
Elizabeth Humes went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while junior center fielder
Brianna Harris went 2-for-4 with four runs scored.
Savannah State broke a scoreless tie in the first inning scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead. After a strikeout, junior shortstop
Drea Lesure walked and Harris reached on an error by shortstop. Humes followed with a two-run double to drive home Lesure and Harris and Jones singled to the pitcher and Humes and Jones advanced to third and second.
Jenkins reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, freshman designated player
Alysha Bolling singled to third base to drive home Humes for a 3-0 lead, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the inning.
NCAT scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2 after the first inning after an RBI single, a fielder's choice that allowed an Aggie to score.
The Lady Tigers added another run in the second inning after Jones singled to the pitcher to drive home Harris for a 4-2 lead and added three runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Harris started the fourth inning with a walk, followed by Humes' single to third base and advanced to second and Harris advanced to third. Jones singled to left field to drive home Harris for a 5-2 lead and to put runners on the corners with one out. Jenkins singled to third base to load the bases and senior pitcher
Amanda McDowell groundout to second base to drive home Humes for a 6-2 lead.
After a groundout to the pitcher for the second out, sophomore second baseman
Allye Sneed singled to third base to drive home Jones and to keep the bases loaded, but a batter's interference ended the inning.
Savannah State scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead after the fifth inning. Lesure started the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman and advance to second. Harris hit an infield single to put runners on the corners. Harris stole second and advanced to third by an error by the shortstop allowed Lesure to score for an 8-2 lead.
After a fly out for the first out of the inning, Jones singled to left field to drive home Harris, but a pop up to the shortstop and a groundout to second base ended the inning.
NCAT added two runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 9-4 after Harris made a great catch with the bases loaded to allow a run scored and a stolen base allowed a runner to score from third.
The Aggies scored the final six runs in the sixth inning after back-to-back RBI singles and a grand slam to left field with two outs to give the Aggies a one-run win.
The Aggies were led by Raven Gray with six RBIs, while Kimberly Brunson and Zadia Davis each added two hits. Mohagony Headen (5-14) picked up the win in relief pitching the final shutout inning giving up one walk.
The Lady Tigers face the Aggies Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Aggie Softball Complex.
