Jacksonville Edges SSU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Bernard Barnes and Khayld both hit home runs for Savannah State but the Tigers would fall to Jacksonville 9-7, in a non-conference game played at Sessions Stadium.
 
Barnes hit a two-run homer for SSU in the second inning while Cox hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
 
The loss drops Savannah State to 10-24 on the season.
 
A three-run home run by Angel Camacho gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
 
SSU answered with two runs in the second and two more in the third for a 4-2 advantage.
 
With two outs in the second inning, Bryce Luken singled a came on when Barnes hit his homer of the right field fence. Jalen Atterbury led off the third with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Cox. Atterbury and Cox scored on a single by Kyle Gerdts.
 
JU left the bases juiced in the fourth but were able to score twice to regain the lead, 5-4.
 
In the top of the seventh Jorge Lopez hit a two-run single that scored Atterbury and Cox to put the Tigers back in front 6-5. Atterbury reached base thanks to an error by the catcher while Cox laid down a bunt to reach base.
 
Jacksonville went ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh by scoring four runs. Scott Dubrule's two-run single gave the Dolphins a 9-6 lead.
 
SSU left two runners on base in the eighth but could not score and Cox's solo homer in the top of the ninth would be as close as they would get.
 
Cox had three hits, scored three times and drove in one run for Savannah State. Gerdts had three hits and drove in two runs. Lopez and Barnes  had two RBI each and Atterbury scored twice.
 
Colby Rhea took the loss. Rhea pitched 2.2 innings and gave up six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out three.
 
Camacho had three hits and drove in four runs for Jacksonville (19-16).
 
Shane Wise earned the win while Mike Cassala got the save. Wise pitched two-third of an inning and gave up one hit while Cassala pitched the final inning and gave up one hit and one run.
 
SSU had 13 hits, made four errors and left seven runners on base while the Dolphins had 15 hits, made one error and left 11 runners on base.
