Longwood Downs SSU 7-3

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State stranded eight base runners in a 7-3 loss to Longwood, in a game played at Tiger Field.

The Lancers scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings for a 4-0 lead.

Alex Lewis hit a two-run home run in the fourth while in the fifth, Brandon Harvell and Ryan Shull scored runs.

Savannah State (6-5)  left the bases loaded in the sixth but sliced their deficit to one by scoring three runs.

Brandon Barnes led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Jacob Lightle struck out but Mason Calloway drew a walk. Bryce Luken singled to center field and an error by the short-shop allowed Barnes to cross home plate. Turner Davis drew a walk to load the bases and a walk to Jorge Lopez allowed Calloway to score. Khalyd Cox struck out for the second out but a walk to Larry Silmon brought home Luken. Kyle Gerdts flied out for the final out of the inning.

J Mitchell hit a RBI single for Longwood in the top of the eighth for a 5-3 lead.

The Lancer got some breathing room in the ninth by scoring two more runs.

Luken had two of the eight hits for the Tigers. Austin Robinson took the loss despite striking out six batters in 7.1 innings.

Longwood (4-7) finished the game with 11 hits and two errors while leaving five men on base.

Lewis drove in two runs for the Lancers. Three LU pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Cody Wagger was the game winner. Wager pitched 5.1 innings and struck out five while giving up five hits, three runs and two walks.

The teams will complete the game-game series on March 5 at 1 p.m.
