Softball Falls to Bethune-Cookman in Doubleheader Sweep Saturday to Start MEAC Play

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (0-23) fell to Bethune-Cookman University (11-23, 2-0 MEAC) 9-1 in six innings and 12-3 in five innings Saturday to start MEAC play at Lady Tiger Softball Field.
 
Sophomore third baseman Allye Sneed went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior right fielder Alexis Singleton went 1-for-5 with a run scored, a triple and two RBIs.

Junior second baseman Brianna Harris and sophomore pitcher Faith Dickerson each recorded a hit, while Dickerson recorded the only RBI and Harris scored the only run.  On the mound, Dickerson (0-11) picked up the loss, pitching the first 1.2 innings giving up two earned runs, while senior pitcher Amanda McDowell pitched the final 4.1 innings giving up no earned runs with three strikeouts.

Bethune-Cookman broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning scoring six runs to take a 6-0 lead after an RBI groundout, a stolen base to score a Wildcat and two two-run double to center field.
 
The Wildcats added another run in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead after an RBI double down the left field line and scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead after an RBI sacrifice fly and scored another run on error.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the final run in the bottom half of the inning after Dickerson singled up the middle to drive home Harris, who started the inning with a single up the middle.
 
The Wildcats were led by Ryan Jackson going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Kailey Richard and Iesha Waters each recorded two RBIs.  On the mound, Sabrina Anguiano (5-6) pitched a complete game giving up one run on two hits.
 
Bethune-Cookman 12, Savannah State 3 (5) (Game Two)
Sneed went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored, while Singleton went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs and junior shortstop Drea Lesure recorded an RBI.  On the mound, McDowell (0-9) pitched the first four innings giving up five runs on nine hits, while Dickerson pitched the final inning giving up five earned runs on four hits. 
 
The Lady Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead after three innings.  McDowell started the inning with a walk and after a sacrifice to advance McDowell to second, Sneed reached on a bunt single to third base to put runners on the corners with one out.  
 
Sneed stole second and Singleton triple to left center to drive home McDowell and Sneed for a 2-0 lead.  Lesure reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher, who threw home to get Singleton, but Singleton touched home plate before the tag for the third run.
 
Bethune-Cookman scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-2 after an RBI single and an RBI double and took the lead in the fifth inning after scoring 10 runs for a 12-3 lead after three RBI singles, a grand slam, an RBI walk and an error allowed two Wildcats to score.
 
The Wildcats were led by Brianna Sanders, Waters, Jackson, Kaitlin Alamprese and Kailey Richard, who recorded two hits each, and Sanders recorded five RBIs.  On the mound, Destiny Enriquez (1-12) picked up the win pitching a complete game giving up three runs on four hits. 
 
The final game of the series is Sunday at noon at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
