Wells Powers SSU Over Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Savannah State halted a four-game losing streak with a 110-91 victory over North Carolina A&T. 

The Corbett Sports Center crowd of 1,002 saw SSU's Casey Wells come off the bench to score a career-high 32 points to lead the way.

Wells made 11 field goals, 10 of which were 3-pointers.

With the scored tied at five, the Tigers used a 15-4 run to grab a 20-9 lead with 11:02 left in the first period.

A pair of free throws by A&T's Sam Hunt would cut Savannah State's lead to nine but a Robert Kelly layup at the 10:30 mark would run the Tigers lead back to double digits, which it would remain the rest of the contest.

SSU (11-16, 8-6 MEAC) led by a dozen with 4:30 left and finished the half with a 15-5 run to take a 58-36 cushion into intermission.

The Aggies found themselves trailing by 23 early in the second period but strung together a 11-0 run to pull within 71-57 with just over 13 minutes left.

Ahead by 17, Savannah State used a 15-2 spurt to get their largest lead of the game at 93-63 with 7:31 remaining.

A&T made a late push but could only get as close as 19.

Dexter McClanahan added 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists for SSU while Austin Dasent had 12 points and Zach Sellers scored 10 points and dished out seven assists. Troyce Manassa had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with his nine points.

The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and finished the game shooting 43 percent SSU made 20 of their 3-point shots and out-rebounded A&T 52 to 44.

Hunt led the Aggies with 18 points.

A&T (2-27, 0-14 MEAC) shot 44.9 percent from the field , made 31 percent of their 3-pointers and made 80 percent of their free throw attempts.
