Tiyonda Davis recorded four blocks to give her 92 blocks this season, which sets the school record for a single season in the Division I era as the Savannah State University (10-15, 7-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Morgan State University (6-19, 4-8 MEAC) to snap a four-game winning streak.
The previous school record was 91 held by Alisha Nelson in the 2009-10 season. Davis recorded her sixth double-double this season with a team-high 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds and shot 7-for-14 from the floor.
Senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added nine points and five rebounds, while shooting 3-for-6 from the floor. Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix and graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss each added eight points, while Hendrix added six rebounds and four assists and Moss added two rebounds and three assists.
The Lady Tigers made three 3-pointers, which moves Savannah State into second most in school history in the Division I era for a single season and had four blocks to give 141 blocks this season, which moves into third place for a single season.
The Lady Tigers scored four of the first six points in the first quarter to take a two-point lead, 4-2, with 7:18 remaining in the quarter, but Morgan State scored six of the next eight points to take a two-point lead, 8-6. Both teams scored a bucket to keep the MSU lead at two, 10-8, after the first quarter.
Savannah State scored seven of the first eight points of the second quarter to take a four-point lead, 15-11, with 7:50 remaining in the quarter, but Morgan State hit two free throws to cut the SSU lead to two points, 15-13, with 5:04 left in the first half. The Lady Tigers scored seven of the next nine points to increase their lead to seven points, 22-15, with 3:11 left, but Morgan State finished the half scoring the final three points to cut the SSU lead to four points, 22-18.
Morgan State scored nine of the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a four-point lead, 27-23, with 6:25 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the MSU lead to a point, 27-26, with 3:07 left. A Bear jump increase its lead to three points, 29-26, with 2:44 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Tigers scored four of the next five points to tie the game at 30 with 2:10 left. A 3-pointer by the Bears gave MSU a three-point lead, 33-30, after three quarters.
The Bears scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to increase their lead to seven points, 37-30, with 8:47 remaining in the quarter, but Savannah State scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the MSU lead to a point, 39-38. Morgan State scored the next five points to increase its lead to six points, 44-38, but the Lady Tigers cut the MSU lead to three points, 44-41, with 1:51 left. MSU scored six of the final eight points for the seven point win.
The Bears were led by Braennan Farrar with 17 points and added seven rebounds, while Chelsea Mitchell added nine points and Zuri White added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Tigers return home to face Coppin State University (7-19, 7-6 MEAC) Monday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
