Tigers Rally Past Fairleigh Dickinson

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Jacob Lightle scored what turned out to be the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and Savannah State went on to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 3-2, in a game played at Tiger Field.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored two runs off of three hits in the top of the third to take the early lead.

SSU had the bases loaded in the bottom half of the third but were unable to score.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jakeel Daniels led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Marcus Mitchell followed with a home run that scored Daniels to tie the score. 

Lighte and Hector Benetiz laid down back to back bunts to start off the bottom of the seventh. A wild pitch advanced the runners a base. Kyle Gerdts grounded out to second and an error by the shortstop allowed Lightle to score the game winning run.

FDU left a runner in scoring position in the top of the eighth and the Tigers stranded two on base in the bottom of the eighth.

Benetiz and Bryce Luken both had two hits for Savannah State (2-0) and Mitchell drove in two runs.

Alex Wright pitched three innings in relief and earned the win for the Tigers. Wright gave up one hit, struck out one and walked one.

Bobby Romano had two hits for the Knights. Evan Layne was tagged with the loss. Layne pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three hits, one run, one walk while striking out three.

SSU finished the contest with seven hits and three errors while the Knights collected six hits and made two errors.
