LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State placed six players in double figures as the second ranked Spartans defeated Savannah State 108-52 before a crowd of 14,797 at the Breslin Center.
SSU missed their first nine shots of the contest as Michigan State jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Tigers got on the scoreboard with 15:02 left in the opening half when Ralueke Orizu made a layup.
Savannah State was down 16-8 at the 13:01 mark but rallied to take a 20-18 lead thanks to a 12-2 run. During the Tigers spurt, Zach Sellers hit a pair of 3-pointers while Alanta Fenner and John Grant hit one apiece.
Michigan State led 37-36 with 4:20 left in the half but finished the period with a 14-2 run to take a 51-38 halftime advantage.
The first half featured one tie and four lead changes.
SSU's bench players scored 25 points in the opening period while the Michigan State reserves scored 11 points.
Savannah State (3-12) found it tough to get a basket in the second half, scoring only 14 points.
MSU ran their lead to 18 early in the second half but a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by
Dexter McClanahan pulled the Tigers within 56-43 with 17:30 showing.
The Tigers were down 13 with 16:16 remaining but Michigan State used an 18-4 run to extend their lead to 76-49.
A 3-pointer by Chris Dubose got Savannah State within 76-52 with 8:58 left.
Unfortunately, those would be the last points SSU would get as Michigan State closed the game with 32 unanswered points en route to a 56 point victory.
It was the fifth game of a seven game road swing by Savannah State and their last game of the 2017 portion of their schedule. SSU finishes their non-conference schedule riding a seven game losing skid.
McClanahan was the only SSU player in double figures with 14 points. Sellers and Ty'Lik Evans each contributed eight points. Sellers, Fenner and Jahir Cabeza each grabbed four rebounds.
The Tigers shot 26.1 percent from the field, made 23.8 percent of their 3-point shots and shot 54.5 percent from the free throw line.
Nick Ward had 21 points and 10 rebounds for MSU.
The Spartans (14-1), who out-rebounded SSU 57 to 28, shot 62.9 percent from the floor, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and made 54.5 percent of their free throw attempts.
