SAVANNAH, Ga.- Alante Fenner led five Savannah State players in double figures with 17 points as the Tigers
defeated Carver College 98-60.
The Tiger Arena crowd of 950 saw Fenner shoot six for eight from the field, make all four of his free throws, grab six rebounds, get five steals and dish out four assists.
Carver led 9-4 early in the game but SSU scored ten straight points during a 19-2 run that put them ahead 23-11 with 12:15 on the clock.
The Cougars (1-13) closed their gap to nine but SSU answered with a 3-pointer from Ty'Lik Evans and layups by
Javaris Jenkins and Zach Sellers to extend their lead to 32-16 with 6:48 showing.
With 5:37 left in the period Savannah State was ahead by 12 but used a 7-0 run that was highlighted by a pair of dunks by freshman Ralueke Orizu to go ahead 39-20.
SSU led 40-24 at intermission.
In the first half, the Tigers received good production from their bench as the reserve players outscored the Carver bench players 29-0.
SSU scored the first six points to start the second half to open up a 46-24 lead.
The Tigers had runs of 16-5, 13-2 and 9-2 in the second half to extend their cushion to as many as 38 points.
The 16-5 run gave Savannah State a 29 point lead with 13:02 left, the 13-2 run put SSU ahead by 35 with 8:45 on the clock and the 9-2 spurt was capped by a 3-pointer from Khalen Pinkett that saw the Tigers lead explode to 38 with 4:09 remaining.
Sellers added 16 points and four assists for the Tigers,
Dexter McClanahan scored 13, Orizu had 12 points and eight rebounds while Evans chipped in 10 points.
SSU (3-6) finished the night shooting 42.2 percent from the floor while out-rebounding the Cougars 55 to 38.
The Cougars had just seven offensive rebounds.
Carver, who made 26 turnovers, was led by Chris Deny who had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The Atlanta based institution shot 36.5 percent from the field and only made four of 24 of their 3-point attempts.
