Allen Leads SSU; WBB Falls to Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior forward Kaylee Allen lead all scorers with 21 points as the Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-1) fell to Alabama State University (1-1) 81-61 Monday night in Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
Allen shot 4-for-8 from the 3-point line and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while junior guard Donasja Scott added 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks and freshman guard Heniaya Moton recorded 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.
 
Freshman center Alexxus Sowell led the team with 10 rebounds, while freshman center Kayla Vance added four points and four rebounds.
 
Allen started the game with a three-point to give the Lady Tigers an early 3-0 lead with 9:26 remaining in the first quarter, but Alabama State 13 of the next 17 points to take a six-point lead, 13-7, with 4:31 left.  Savannah State outscored ASU 12-4 during the rest of the quarter to take a two-point lead, 19-17, after the first.
 
Freshman guard Teyah Johnson's three-pointer gave Savannah State a five-point lead, 22-17, with 9:41 remaining in the second quarter, but the Hornets scored the next four points to cut the lead to a point, 22-21.  An Allen three-pointer increase the Lady Tiger lead to four points, 25-21, with 8:32 left, but Alabama State scored the next seven points to take a three-point lead, 28-25, with 6:18 remaining in the first half.  SSU scored five of the next seven points to tie the game at 30 with 4:55 left, but ASU scored 10 of the final 12 points to take an eight-point halftime lead, 40-32.
 
After an ASU bucket to start the third quarter to increase the Hornet lead to 10 points, 42-32, with 8:46 remaining in the third quarter, a Scott jumper cut the lead back to eight points, 42-34, with 8:14 left.  The Hornets scored the next six points to increase their lead to 14 points, 48-34, with 7:07 remaining, but Savannah State scored nine of the next 10 points to cut the lead to six points, 49-43, with 5:22 left.  ASU outscored SSU 6-1 during the rest of the quarter to take an 11-point lead, 55-44, after three quarters.
 
Alabama State scored five of the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 14-point lead, 60-46, with 7:35 remaining in the quarter, but a Scott layup cut the lead to 12 points, 60-48.  The Hornets scored six of the next seven points to increase the lead to 17 points, 66-49, with 5:52 left, but a three-pointer by Scott cut the lead to 14 points, 66-52, with 4:48 remaining in the game.  ASU outscored SSU 15-12 during the rest of the quarter for the 20-point win.
 
The Hornets were led by Arleatha Gipson with 13 points off the bench, Shamyiah Smith with 12 points, Tatyana Calhoun with 13 rebounds and 11 points for a double-double.
 
The Lady Tigers return to Savannah for the Savannah Invitational next week at the Civic Center.  SSU faces Providence College Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., followed by University of Richmond Wednesday at 2 p.m. and University of Florida Thursday at 7 p.m.
