SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's volleyball team (2-17) hosts Georgia Southern University (5-11) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium as one of two matches made up from Hurricane Irma.
Originally, the Lady Tigers were set to travel to Statesboro, Ga., for three matches for the GATA Challenge Sept. 8-9 with two against GS and one against Kennesaw State University. Because of the hurricane, the matches were canceled and SSU-GS scheduled home-and-home, with SSU traveling to GS Nov. 6. The SSU-KSU match will not be made up.
The Lady Tigers are led by junior outside hitter
Jennifer Rosado with 1.50 kills per set, senior setter
Alee Quint with 4.00 assists per set and freshman libero
Leiri Melendez with 3.10 digs per set.
Freshman middle blocker
Tyran Chenault leads the team with 0.78 blocks per set and is second with 1.38 kills per set, while freshman setter
Salma Gonzalez averages 1.94 digs per set, 2.86 assists per set and 1.13 kills per set.
Savannah State went 0-2 last weekend with losses to North Carolina A&T State University 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 17-25) and to North Carolina Central University 3-1 (20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 10-25). Rosado and Gonzalez both recorded double-doubles against NCCU as Rosado led the team with 11 kills and added 11 digs, while Gonzalez recorded 17 assists and 15 digs and needed one kill for a triple-double as she finished with nine kills.
The Eagles have lost the last three matches after winning the previous three matches. GS is led by Lauren Reichard with 2.67 kills per set, April Luther with 9.78 assists and Joscelin Morrow with 3.25 digs per set.
The Lady Tigers return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule with a road trip to Orangeburg, S.C., to face South Carolina State University Friday at 7 p.m.
