Gonzalez Nearly Records a Triple-Double as Volleyball Falls to NCCU 3-1 Sunday

Box Score DURHAM, N.C.  – Freshman setter Salma Gonzalez nearly recorded a triple-double after nine kills, 17 assists and 15 digs, while junior outside hitter Jennifer Rosado also recorded a double-double with a team-high 11 kills and added 11 digs as Savannah State University women's volleyball team (2-17, 0-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina Central University (2-13, 2-1 MEAC) 3-1 (20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 10-25) Sunday in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
 
This was Gonzalez second career double-double, but it was the first for Rosado at Savannah State. Rosado also added four blocks and Gonzalez added a block, while senior Alee Quint led the team with 22 assists and added four digs and freshman libero Leiri Melendez led the team with 18 digs and a service ace.
 
Freshman outside hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova tied a career-high with seven kills and added eight digs, while freshman middle blocker Tyran Chenault added five kills and led the team with five blocks and freshman middle blocker Oniellia Fuller added five kills.
 
North Carolina Central scored four of the first five points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but the Lady Tigers scored eight of the next 11 points to take a two-point lead, 9-7.  Savannah State scored four of the next six points increase its lead to four-points, 13-9, but the Eagles scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 14.  SSU scored two of the next three points to take a two-point lead, 17-15, but NCCU outscored SSU 10-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The Eagles scored 14 of the first 21 points in the second frame to take a seven-point lead, 14-7, forcing a Savannah State timeout.  After the timeout, the Lady Tigers scored 11 of the next 16 points to close within a point, 19-18, but NCCU outscored SSU 7-4 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
Savannah State scored eight of the first 11 points in the third stanza to take a five-point lead, 8-3, but the Eagles scored four of the next five points to pull within two points, 9-7, forcing a Savannah State timeout.  After the timeout, the Lady Tigers scored eight of the next 12 points to increase their lead to five points, 17-12, forcing a North Carolina Central timeout.  After the timeout, the Eagles scored nine of the next 12 points to take a point lead, 21-20, but SSU scored five of the final six points to win the set and to cut the match lead to 2-1.
 
NCCU scored the first three points of the final set before a kill from Chenault got SSU on the board and to cut the lead to 3-1.  The Eagles outscored SSU 22-9 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
 
The Eagles were led by Da'Nesha Miller with 15 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double, Paige Phillips with 43 assists and added 16 digs for a double-double and Bree Simmons with 21 digs.
 
The Lady Tigers return home for Georgia Southern University Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium before heading back into MEAC action with South Carolina State University Friday at 7 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
