WBB Falls Short to B-CU 38-31 in MEAC Opener Wednesday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-11, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) comes up short against Bethune-Cookman University (5-8, 1-0 MEAC) 38-31 Wednesday night in Tiger Arena.
 
Senior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with seven points, nine rebounds and four rebounds, while senior center Jeremica Edwards added seven rebounds, five points and a game-high five steals.
 
Senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added six points on 3-for-5 shooting, while senior guard Rhianna Warren added five points and three rebounds.
 
A three-pointer by Warren and a layup by Davis gave the Lady Tigers a five-point lead, 5-0, with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter, but the Wildcats ended the quarter scoring the final six points to take a point lead, 6-5, after the first quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers scored five of the first seven points to take a two-point lead, 10-8, with 6:01 remaining in the second quarter, but the Wildcats scored five of the next seven points to take a point lead, 13-12, with 3:33 remaining.  SSU scored the next four points to take a three-point lead, 16-14, with 1:36 remaining in the first half, but B-CU scored the final four points to tie the game at 16 heading into half.
 
A jumper by Warren gave the Lady Tigers a two-point lead, 18-16, with 9:38 left in the third quarter, but the Wildcats scored nine of the next 11 points to take a five-point lead, 25-20, with 2:54 remaining.  SSU outscored B-CU 4-2 to cut the lead to three points, 27-24, after the third quarter.
 
Bethune-Cookman scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to take an 11-point lead, 35-24, with 5:17 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored seven of the next eight points to cut the lead to five points, 36-31, with 2:47 left in the game, but B-CU scored the final two points of the game for the seven point win.
 
The Wildcats were led by Ashanti Hunt with nine points and added eight points, while Kailyn Williams led the team with 13 rebounds and four blocks and added four points. 
 
The Lady Tigers take a trip up north to face Norfolk State University (6-7, 1-0 MEAC) Saturday at 4 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
