SSU Winning Streak Continues

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Savannah State won their fifth game in a row with a 73-70 victory over Howard, in a game played at Burr Arena.

The crowd of 1,975 saw the Tigers overcome a nine-point deficit in the second half.

Dexter McClanahan led the way for Savannah State with a career-high 29 points as he knocked down six 3-pointers and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Howard led 53-44 with 10:59 left but SSU answered with a 3-pointer by Casey Wells followed by a pair of free throws by Troyce Manassa, a 3-pointer and a free throw from Wells and a 3pointer from Austin Dasent to give the Tigers a 57-56 edge with just under eight minutes showing.

The Bison led 66-62 with 4:57 led but a pair of 3-pointers by Manassa and one by McClanahan put Savannah State ahead 71-66 with 2:06 remaining.

A jumper by Charles Williams and a layup from Damon Collins puled Howard within 71-70 but a pair of free throws from McClanahan with 22 seconds left proved to be the difference.

Howard missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the final seconds in an attempt to tie the game.

Manassa added 17 points for SSU (9-12, 6-2 MEAC) while Wells contributed 10.

In the first period, Howard used a 13-2 run to take a 27-14 lead with 7:22 left.

Down by nine with just under four minutes left, SSU strung together a 8-0 run to close their gap to 33-32 with 40 seconds remaining.

Williams hit a jumper with eight seconds left to send the Bison into intermission with a 35-32 edge.

Zach Sellers opened the second period with a 3-pointer to knot the contest at 35 but Howard responded with seven unanswered points to go ahead 42-35.

SSU rallied to tie the game at 42 but Howard answered and went ahead 53-44 after a layup by Jalen Jones with just under 11 minutes left.

The Tigers finished the game shooting 30.8 percent from the field and 29.4 from beyond the arc.

The Savannah State bench players outscored the Bison reserves 20-6 and SSU scored 30 points off of 29 Howard turnovers.

Williams led Howard with a game-high 37 points while Marcel Boyd had a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Bison (5-16, 2-4 MEAC) shot 40.6 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Tigers 63 to 39.
