STATESBORO, Ga. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (0-7) won the third set against host Georgia Southern University (3-3), but fell to the Eagles 3-1 (9-25, 20-25, 25-23, 14-25) and fell to Jacksonville State University (2-5) 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 12-25) Friday at the Bash in the 'Boro in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Freshman outside hitter
Dominic Ingraham led the Lady Tigers with 18 kills in both matches and with six blocks, while senior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel added 12 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe added 11 kills and 19 assists, while junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 35 assists and added 12 digs. Senior libero
Alexis Washington led the team with 18 digs in two matches.
Georgia Southern 3, Savannah State 1
Ingraham led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills, while Quint led the team with 19 assists and added nine digs and Washington led the team with 10 digs. Masoe added six kills, six assists, five digs and two blocks, while Nathaniel added five kills and six digs.
Georgia Southern scored the first 10 points of the match to take a 10-0 in the first set, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to seven points, 10-3. GS outscored SSU 15-6 during the rest of the set to capture the 16-point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
After Georgia Southern scored the first point to take a 1-0 lead in the second frame, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to take a two-point, 3-1. The Eagles scored eight of the next 11 points to take a three-point lead, 9-6, but SSU battled back to recapture the lead by scoring nine of the next 12 points to take a three-point lead, 15-12. GS scored the next three points to tie the match at 15. The Eagles outscored SSU 10-5 during the rest of the set to capture the five-point set win and to take a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
With Quint starting the third stanza serving, the Lady Tigers scored the first five points to open up a 5-0 lead. Georgia Southern scored three of the next four points to close within three points, 6-3, but Savannah State increased their lead by scoring five of the next eight points for a six-point lead, 11-5. With the Lady Tigers holding a seven-point lead, 16-10, the Eagles scored the next four points to close within two points, 16-14.
Savannah State scored eight of the next 14 points to increase its lead to four, 24-20 and with Georgia Southern facing set point, the Eagles scored the next three points to close within a point, 24-23, but a Nathaniel kill gave the Lady Tigers the two-point set win.
The Lady Tigers scored three of the first five points in the final set to capture a 3-2 lead, but Georgia Southern scored the next three points to take a two-point lead, 5-3. Savannah State scored the next three points to take a point lead, 6-5. With the score tied at eight, the Eagles scored the next six points to capture a six-point lead, 14-8, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to close within four points, 14-10. GS outscored SSU 11-4 during the rest of the set to capture an 11-point set win and to win the match.
The Eagles were led by Carly Turner with nine kills, Kendra Koetter with 29 assists and Alex Beecher with 12 digs.
Jacksonville State 3, Savannah State 0
Nathaniel and Ingraham led the Lady Tigers with seven kills each, while Quint led the team with 16 assists and Washington led the team with eight digs. Masoe added five kills and 13 assists, while graduate student
Justice Dilworth added four kills.
Jacksonville State scored nine of the first 11 points in the first set to capture a 9-2 lead forcing a Savannah State timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Tigers scored six of the next seven points to close the gap to two points, 10-8, forcing a Gamecocks timeout. JSU outscored SSU 15-7 during the rest of the set to capture a 10-point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Gamecocks scored 14 of the first 19 points in the second stanza to capture a nine-point lead, 14-5, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to close the gap within six points, 14-8. JSU outscored SSU 11-5 during the rest of the set to capture the 12-point set win and to take a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
JSU scored six of the first 10 points in the final frame to take a 6-4 lead, but the Lady Tigers tied the match at six by scoring the next two points. The Gamecocks outscored SSU 19-6 during the rest of the set to capture the 13-point set win and to win the match.
The Gamecocks were led by Allyson Zuhlke with 12 kills, Rachel Perucki with 15 assists and with 11 digs for a double-double.
The Lady Tigers host their first match of the season against East Carolina University on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
