Mercer Rallies Past Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Danny Edgeworth hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth to lead Mercer to a 7-3 non-conference win over Savannah State, in a game played at Tiger Field.

Savannah State held a 3-1 lead after seven innings of play but the Bears scored twice in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.

Mercer loaded the bases in the ninth as Matt Meeder walked, Jackson Ware reached on a fielder's choice and Trey Truitt bunted his way onto base. Edgewood then stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit.

The Tigers (10-32) stranded two runners on base in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings but could not score.

Both teams sent runners across home plate in the second inning as Hunter Bening walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ware in the top half of the inning while SSU's Jakeel Daniels led off with a single and scored when Ryan McCranie hit into a double play.

Charles Sikes hit a RBI single in the third that allowed Jalen Atterbury to score to put SSU ahead 2-1.

The Tigers added another run in the fifth when Cox hit a RBI double that scored Khalyd Cox for a 3-1 advantage.
 
Sikes led Savannah State with two hits and two RBIs while Daniels collected three hits. Cox, Atterbury and Cole Bruce all had two hits apiece for SSU.
 
Chris Hayes was the losing pitcher. Hayes pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up two hits and four runs.
 
Edgewood had 4 RBI for the Bears while Truitt collected three hits.
 
Reliever Nick Spear was the winning pitcher. Spear struck out three in two innings of work  while giving up three hits.
 
SSU had 13 hits, made two errors and left 10 runners on base while Mercer (26-16) had 11 hits and left seven runners on the basepads.
