Singleton and Jones leads SSU to a 9-2 Win over N.C. A&T Sunday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (21-20, 10-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won the final game of the series 9-2 over North Carolina A&T State University (14-29, 3-9 MEAC) to win the series Sunday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field on Senior Day.
 
The Lady Tigers scored four runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth inning, while the Lady Aggies scored a run in the first and fifth innings.
 
Junior center fielder Alexis Singleton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while freshman Cortni Jones went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs and senior right fielder Molly Lillis went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
Sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while junior pitcher Amanda Hallman went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  On the mound, Hallman (11-9) pitched a complete game giving up two unearned runs on two hits with seven strikeouts.
 
The Lady Aggies scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning after a sacrifice fly to left field, who scored an Aggie that reached on base by an error to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Lady Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs scored for a 4-1 lead after three innings.  Senior second baseman Antonette Smith started the inning by reaching on an error and after a pop out to the second baseman for the first out of the inning, junior left fielder Chasney Jenkins singled to advance Smith to second.
 
Harris doubled through the left side to drive home Smith to tie the game at one and advance Jenkins to third.  The next batter, Singleton singled to right field to bring home Jenkins and Harris to take a 3-1 lead and advanced to second on the throw to home plate.  Wright was hit by a pitch and Jones singled home Singleton to take a 4-1 lead, but Wright was thrown out at third in a rundown and Jones advanced to second during the rundown for the second out. Jones advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the next batter groundout to third for the final out.
 
The Lady Aggies left an opportunity to answer SSU, but left the bases loaded after a fielder's choice got the runner out at third in the top of the fourth inning to keep the Lady Tigers lead to 4-1.
 
The Lady Aggies pushed across a run in the top of the fifth inning after a single to right field to bring in a run to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 4-2, but Savannah State scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take home the seven run win.
 
After a groundout to start the bottom of the fifth, Singleton hit an infield single and Wright was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.  Jones doubled to deep center field to bring in Singleton and Wright to take a 6-2 lead.  Hallman followed with a double down the left field line to bring in Jones for a 7-2 lead and junior catcher Tia Bolden walked to put runners on first and second with one out. 
 
After a pitching change, Smith walked on four pitches to load the bases and Lillis singled to center field to bring in Hallman and Bolden to take a 9-2 lead.  The inning ended on a strikeout and a fly out to right field. 
 
The Lady Aggies final chance in the top of the seventh inning came up short as Hallman recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to third base.
 
The Lady Aggies were led by Janika Maygoing 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Raven Gray added a hit and an RBI, Zadaisha Young-Waddell added a hit and an RBI.  On the mound, Young-Waddell (4-15) recorded the loss pitching the first 4.1 innings giving up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits, while Mohagony Headen pitched the final 1.2 innings giving up one hit and three walks.
 
The Lady Tigers conclude the 10-game homestand with a doubleheader against in-state rival Georgia Southern Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
