Mercer Downs Savannah State

MACON, Ga.- Ryan Hagan and Danny Edgeworth drove in three runs apiece to lead Mercer to a 16-6 non-conference victory over Savannah State, in a game played at Claude Smith Field.
 
SSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Charles Sikes that sent Jonathan Moore across home plate.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Ben Upton hit a two-run homer and Edgeworth had a RBI single to put the Bears ahead 3-1.
 
Edgeworth added a two-run triple in the third as Mercer scored three runs to increase their lead to 6-1.
 
Savannah State sliced their deficit to 6-4 in the top of the fourth with Ryan McCranie hitting a RBI single and Mendez Elder adding a two-run single.
 
Hagan hit a two-run home run for Mercer in the bottom of the inning as the Bears scored four runs to take a 10-4 advantage.
 
A run in the sixth gave Mercer a 11-4 lead and the Bears tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 16-4 cushion.
 
 Ginacarlo Mirabal and Marcus Mitchell both had RBI doubles for the Tigers in the ninth but it would not be enough.
 
Cole Bruce had two hits for Savannah State (7-19) while Elder drove in a pair of runs.
 
The Tigers used seven pitchers in the game and Greg Hollman took the loss. Hollman started the contest and lasted 2.2 innings as he gave up 7 hits, 6 runs and 2 walks while striking out 2.
 
SSU had 12 hits in the game, made two errors and left eight men on base.
 
Hagan, Upton, Kyle Lewis and Howard Joe all hit home runs for the Bears.
 
Conard Broom was the winning pitcher. Broom entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out six.
 
Mercer (16-9) had 17 hits, made 2 errors and stranded 10 men on base.
