Softball Falls to Buffalo in a Doubleheader Friday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (10-17) lost both games in a doubleheader to University at Buffalo (6-19) losing 6-3 in game one and 9-0 in game two at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
 
Sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris led the team going 4-for-8 at the plate, while junior third baseman Tia Bolden, junior left fielder Chasney Jenkins, senior first baseman Torrian Wright each recorded three hits in both games.
 
Buffalo 6, Savannah State 3
Jenkins, Harris, Wright and Bolden each recorded two hits, while Bolden added a run scored and RBI, Jenkins added a run scored and Wright added two RBIs.  Freshman pitcher Katie Johnson (3-2) picked up the loss pitching the first four innings giving up two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, while sophomore pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub pitched the final three innings giving up three earned runs on four hits.
 
Buffalo broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning with a run to lead 1-0 after an error by the catcher's throw to third base allowed a runner to score.  The Bulls scored another run in the top of the third inning to lead 2-0 after an RBI single. 
 
UB increased its lead to 3-0 after a run in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double, but the Lady Tigers got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1.  Bolden provided the run with a solo home run to center field. 
 
Buffalo scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to increase its lead to 6-1 after a two-run double and an RBI single, but the Lady Tigers scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to final margin of three runs.
 
After a strikeout to begin the inning, senior right fielder Molly Lillis reached first base after being hit by a pitch and Jenkins followed with a single to left field to put runners on first and second with one out.  After a groundout for the second out of the inning to advance the runners to second and third, junior center fielder Alexis Singleton was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wright.
 
On a 2-2 count, Wright hit a blooper to right field to drive in two runs and put runners on the corners with two outs, but a pop out to second base ended the game.
 
The Bulls were led by Savanna Norcio, Danielle Lallos and Kenzie Koch with two hits each, while Norcio added a run scored and an RBI, Lallos added an RBI and Koch added a run scored.  Charlotte Miller (2-3) picked up the win pitching the first five inning giving up one run on seven hits, while Brieanna Baker picked up her first save of the season pitching the final two innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits.
 
Buffalo 9, Savannah State 0
Harris led the team going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jenkins, Singleton, Wright, Bolden and Lillis each recorded a hit.  On the mound, junior pitcher Amanda Hallman (5-8) picked up the loss pitching the first three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits, while freshman Faith Dickerson pitched the final four innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
 
Buffalo scored the first four runs of the game in the top of the first inning after an RBI walk, an RBI groundout and an error that allowed two runs to score for a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
 
The Bulls added a run in the top of the second inning to lead 5-0 after an RBI single and increased its lead by scoring two more runs in the top of the third inning to lead 7-0 after three innings after a leadoff home run to center field and an error that allowed a run to score.
 
UB scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning after a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Bulls the nine run win.
 
Norcio led the Bulls with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with one run scored, while Koch and Edwards added two RBIs. 
 
The Lady Tigers travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series against Bethune-Cookman starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and finishes the series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
