Savannah State Halts Losing Streak With Win Over Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga.- Savannah State's five game losing streak came to a halt with a 10-6 non-conference win over Georgia State in a game played at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Tigers (5-13) trailed 6-4 after seven innings but scored four times in the eighth and twice more in the ninth to seal the victory.
In the eighth, Jonathan Moore led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A double by Charles Sikes advanced Moore to third. Back-to-back singles by Mendez Elder and Brian Miller allowed Moore and Sikes to cross home plate. Somto Egbuna reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. After Ryan McCranie struck out, Jacob Lightle grounded out to shortstop which allowed Elder to score. Marcus Mitchell's single up the middle brought home Miller to give SSU a 8-6 advantage.
In the ninth, Jalen Atterbury tripled and Moore was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. RBI singles by Sikes and Egbuna cleared the way for Atterbury and Moore to score.
Georgia State loaded the bases in the bottom of he ninth but was unable to score any runs.
The Panthers took the early lead with two runs in the first inning but Savannah State responded when Malcolm Moore hit a two-run single in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2.
GSU took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth.
Savannah State tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth when Elder hit a RBI double that scored Atterbury but GSU scored a run in the bottom portion of the inning to go ahead 4-3.
A RBI single by Mitchell knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh but Georgia State got a two-run single from Jack Thompson for a 6-4 advantage.
Greg Smith earned the win on the mound for the Tigers while McCranie got the save. Smith pitched 3.1 innings and gave up six walks, three hits and two runs while McCranie pitched one third of a inning and gave up no hits or runs.
J. Moore, Elder and Mitchell all drove in two runs for SSU while Atterbury scored three runs and J. Moore scored twice. J. Moore had three hits while Atterbury, Sikes, Elder and Mitchell all had two hits.
Thompson led GSU (9-8) with 4RBI and had two hits.
Devin Vainer, who was one of six GSU pitchers to take the mound, was tagged with the loss. Vainer gave up four hits and four runs in the eighth inning.
The Tigers had 15 hits in the game, made one error and left six men on base while GSU had eight hits, made two errors and stranded 11 runners.
