WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Howard University (5-20, 3-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) leading by six points, 49-43, after three quarters, the Savannah State University (8-16, 5-8 MEAC) outscored HU 26-15 in the final quarter to defeat Howard 69-64 Saturday in Burr Gymnasium by using an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to pull within in a point, 49-48, with 8:19 remaining in the quarter, but HU scored the next four points to push the lead to five, 53-48, with 7:24 left. SSU scored the next four points to pull within a point, 53-52, at the 6:06 mark, but HU extended its lead by scoring the next five points to take a 58-52 lead with 4:52 remaining.
SSU tied the score at 58 with 4:01 left after two free made 3-pointers by sophomore guard
Lauryn Fields and a junior guard
Rhianna Warren layup gave the Lady Tigers their first lead of the second half, 60-58, at the 3:35 mark. SSU scored the next three points to cap an 11-0 run and to extend its lead to five, 63-58, with 2:04 remaining.
HU scored the next four points to close within a point, 65-64, with 43 seconds left, but a Howard turnover and two made free throws by Fields extended the Lady Tigers lead to three, 67-64, with 41 seconds left. SSU finished the game by scoring the final two points as junior forward
Caprisha Treadwell and Warren both went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to seal the victory for the Lady Tigers.
Four players scored at least five points in the fourth quarter. Fields led SSU with eight points on 2-for-2 shooting from the 3-point line, while sophomore forward
Jada Young added six points, Warren added five points and five rebounds and Treadwell added five points.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix led SSU with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists, while junior center
Tiyonda Davis led the team with 12 rebounds and added 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor. Treadwell recorded a career-high with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting with six rebounds and three blocks.
Warren and Fields each added eight points, while Warren added six rebounds and Fields went 2-for-3 behind the 3-point line with two rebounds.
The Lady Tigers outrebounded the Bison by 14, 45-31, while shooting .446 (25-for-56), including .500 (4-for-8) from the 3-point line during the game. The Bison shot .381 (24-for-63), including .143 (2-for-14) from the 3-point line.
A Davis layup began the game and gave SSU an early 2-0 lead with 9:32 remaining in the first quarter and with the score tied at 12, HU scored the next three points to take a three-point lead, 15-12, at the 2:38 mark, but a Hendrix made free throw cut the lead to two points, 15-13, after one quarter of play.
A Shaw jumper to start the second quarter tied the game at 15 with 9:07 remaining in the quarter. With both teams scoring a basket to keep the game tied at 17 at the 7:54 mark, Howard scored the next four points to take a 21-17 lead with 7:01 left. The Lady Tigers battled back to tie the game at 22 with 6:08 remaining by scoring five of the next six points.
With the score tied at 26 at the 3:42 mark in the second quarter, Howard scored the next four points to take a 30-26 lead with 1:55 left, but a Hendrix layup cut the lead to two points, 30-28, with 27 seconds left. Howard scored the final three points of the first half to take a five-point lead heading into the locker rooms.
The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter scoring the first three points of the quarter to cut the HU lead to two, 33-31, with 7:40 remaining in the quarter. With the Bison holding a two-point lead, 38-36, with 5:34 left, Hampton scored the next four points to increase the lead to six, 42-36, at the 4:48 mark.
A Warren 3-pointer cut the lead to three, 42-39, with 4:18 left, but a Howard layup pushed the lead to five points, 44-39 with 3:29 remaining. Tanease Richardson's layup at the buzzer cut the lead to six, 49-43, heading into the final quarter.
The Bison was led by Victoria Gonzales with 16 points and added seven rebounds and Imani Bailey added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Te'Shya Heslip added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Tigers return home against South Carolina State University (10-13, 6-7 MEAC) Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
