Davis Sets Rebound School Record in a 62-39 win over South Carolina State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior center Tiyonda Davis led SSU 13 rebounds to give her 692 career rebounds, which sets a rebounding school record in the Division I era as the Savannah State University women's basketball team (9-16, 6-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated South Carolina State University (11-14, 7-8 MEAC) in Tiger Arena Saturday afternoon, where the Lady Tigers never trailed in the game.
 
Davis passed Alisha Nelson, who recorded 684 rebounds from 2008-12.  The Athens, Ga., native also led SSU with four blocks and added seven points on 2-for-4 shooting and a steal.  The four blocks gives her 69 blocks this season, which moves her into third place in school history for a single season and needs five rebounds to move into second place. 
 
Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix recorded a game-high 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including shooting 4-for-6 from the 3-point line and added six rebounds and two assists, while junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added a career-high 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting and added four rebounds and two assists.
 
The four made 3-pointers for Hendrix gives her 52 made 3-pointers this season, which moves her into second place in school history for a single season and needs four made 3-point field goals to move into first place.  The six made field goals gives her 297 career made field goals, which moves her into seven place in school history.
 
Junior forward Jeremica Edwards added eight points on 4-for-8 shooting with seven rebounds, while sophomore Lauryn Fields added eight points and four assists and sophomore Jada Young added seven rebounds and four points on 2-for-3 shooting.
 
The Lady Tigers shot 44.4 (24-for-54) perfect from the field, including 42.9 (6-for-14) percent from the 3-point line, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 21.4 (12-for-56) percent from the field, including 20.0 (3-for-15) percent from the 3-point line.  SSU outrebounded SCSU by 16, 51-35, and had 10 more assists, 14-4.
 
Savannah State scored 16 of the first 20 points to take a 12-point lead, 16-4, with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter, but SCSU scored the final six points of the quarter to cut the lead to six, 16-10, after the first quarter. 
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first five points of the second quarter to capture an 11-point lead, 21-10, with 8:36 remaining in the quarter, but SCSU scored seven of the next 11 points to cut the lead to eight, 25-17, with 5:23 remaining in the first half.  SSU scored eight of the next 11 points to take a 13-point lead, 33-20, heading into the locker room.
 
Hendrix led SSU with 11 points in the first half on 4-for-6 shooting, while Shaw added eight points and Davis added four rebounds and four points.
 
SSU scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 20-point lead, 40-20, with 7:28 remaining in the quarter, but SCSU scored the next four points to cut the lead to 16, 40-24, at the 5:13 mark.  The Lady Tigers scored five of the next six points to push their lead back to 20, 45-25, with 2:18 left, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the final three points of the quarter to cut the lead to 17, 45-28, after three quarters of play.
 
The Lady Bulldogs scored six of the first seven points of the final quarter to cut the lead to 15, 46-31, with 8:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored 11 of the next 13 points to increase their lead to a game-high 24 points, 57-33, at the 3:10 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs scored six of the next eight points to cut the lead to 20, 59-39, with 2:00 left, but Fields' 3-pointer at the 1:44 mark gave SSU the 23-point win.
 
Brittany Drumgoole led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points and three steals, while Jasmine Coleman recorded a game-high 14 rebounds and seven blocks and Ashleigh Outler and Amber Howard each added seven points.
 
The Lady Tigers travel to Durham, N.C., to face North Carolina Central (4-21, 2-12 MEAC) Monday at 6 p.m. before returning home for the final regular season game of the season against Florida A&M Thursday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
