WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Savannah State University men's basketball team (11-13, 7-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won its fourth straight game with a 66-56 win against Howard University (11-16, 5-7 MEAC) in Burr Gymnasium Saturday.
Freshman
Kamil Williams led SSU with 17 points off the bench on 6-for-10 shooting, including 5-for-9 from the 3-point line, while graduate student
Christopher Martin and junior
Troyce Manassa each added 16 points. Martin shot 5-for-10 from the floor and added four rebounds, while Manassa added three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Graduate student
Lenjo Kilo led SSU with eight rebounds and added seven points.
The Tigers outscored Howard by 10 points, 26-16, off of turnovers and by 17 bench points, 26-9. SSU shot .420 (21-for-50), including .444 (12-for-27), while Howard shot .450 (18-for-40), including .182 (2-for-11) from the 3-point line.
Howard scored the first four points of the game to lead 4-0 with 18:47 remaining in the first half, but the Tigers scored 16 of the next 18 points to lead by 10 points, 16-6, with 12:12 left, which including a 10-0 run when the game was tied at six.
The Tigers extended its lead to a game-high 16 points, 31-15, with 4:47 remaining in the first half, with SSU outscoring HU 15-9. Howard cut SSU's lead to 10, 34-24, by outscoring SSU 9-3, heading into the locker room.
Howard started the second half with a layup to cut the Tigers lead to eight points, 34-26, with 18:23 remaining in the game, but the Tigers pushed their lead back to double digits by scoring five of the next eight points to lead by 10, 39-29, with 16:18 left. Howard scored eight of the next nine points to close within three points, 40-37, at the 11:20 mark, but the Tigers quickly bounced back by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to lead by 14 points, 53-39, with 4:30 left, including a 9-0 run.
Howard scored the nine of the next 11 points to cut SSU's lead to seven points, 55-48, with 3:13 remaining in the game. With SSU holding an eight-point lead, 58-50, at the 1:53 mark, the Tigers scored the next four points to lead by 12 points, 62-50, with 1:05 left. HU outscored SSU 6-4 as the Tigers held on to a 10-point win.
Howard was led by James Daniel III recorded a game-high 24 points, while Marcel Boyd and Tyler Stone each added eight points, while Stone and Damon Collins led the team with eight rebounds each.
The Tigers return home for a two-game homestand with a nonconference battle against Allen University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
