Softball Falls to College of Charleston 9-7 Sunday to Close out 1st Annual Lady Tiger Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (1-4) fell to College of Charleston (3-1) to end the 1st Annual Lady Tiger Classic on Sunday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field. 
 
Freshman third baseman Cortni Jones led SSU with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs, while sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris and junior right fielder Alexis Singleton each went 2-for-4, while Harris added a run scored and two RBIs and Singleton added a run scored.
 
Junior pitcher Amanda Hallman started the game and pitched 5.0 innings giving up four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts, while freshman pitcher Faith Dickerson (0-1) picked up the loss, pitching the final two innings giving up two runs on four hits.
 
College of Charleston started the game scoring the first four runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning.  The Cougars recorded an RBI single to lead 1-0, followed by another RBI single to increase their lead to 2-0, followed by an error that allowed a Cougar to score for a 3-0 lead and then a double that brought home another run.
 
CofC added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to lead 6-0 by an RBI double, followed by a Cougar scoring off a throwing error.
 
The Lady Tigers scored their first run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 6-1 after four innings.  Senior second baseman Antonette Smith doubled down the right field line to bring home Jones.
 
CofC added another run in the top of the fifth inning to lead 7-1 with an RBI walk and left the bases loaded.
 
The Lady Tigers bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs.  After a flyout to start the inning, sophomore center fielder Shelby Eccles singled up the middle and junior left field Chasney Jenkins walked to put runners on first and second with one out.
 
Harris singled to third base, which allowed Eccles to score and put runners on first and second with one out.  Singleton singled to the shortstop to load the bases.  Hallman walked to bring in Jenkins and to keep the bases loaded with one out.  Jones doubled down the left field line to bring in Singleton and Harris.  The Lady Tigers stranded runners on second and third after a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
 
The Lady Tigers tied the game at seven with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after an RBI single  by Jenkins to bring home senior pinch runner Tamara Jones, followed by Harris' single to bring home Jenkins to tie the game.
 
The Cougars scored the final two runs in the top of the seventh inning off a two-out two-run double to win by the final margin of two.
 
Taylor DuPree led the Cougars with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, while Jordin Jones went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Sydney Shipley started the game and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits, while Valerie Cassell (2-0) picked up the win pitching the final 1.2 shutout innings.
 
The Lady Tigers are back in action this weekend with the USC Spartan Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.  SSU starts with Akron University Friday at noon.
