ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (7-16, 4-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to South Carolina State University (10-12, 6-6 MEAC) 56-43 Saturday in the S-H-M Memorial Center.
 
Junior forward Jeremica Edwards came off the bench and scored 13 points to lead all scorers and added five rebounds, while junior center Tiyonda Davis added a game-high 13 rebounds with six points and three blocks.
 
Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix added five points, while sophomore guard Lauryn Fields also added five points on 2-for-4 shooting with four rebounds.
 
South Carolina State opened the game scoring 10 of the first 15 points to open with a 10-5 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to one, 10-9, at the 1:30 mark before SCSU finished the quarter on a 4-0 run to push the lead back to five, 14-9, after one quarter.
 
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first three points of the second quarter to grab an eight-point lead, 17-9, with 7:56 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers battled back to within a possession by scoring the next eight points to trail by two points, 19-17, at the 4:23 mark.  After a SCSU made free throw, a jumper by junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw cut the lead to a point, 20-19, with 4:05 remaining in the first half.  The Lady Bulldogs scored the next six points to push their lead to seven points, 26-19, with 1:06 left, but a jumper by Edwards with five seconds left, cut the lead to five points, 26-21, heading into the locker room.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first five points of the third quarter to tie the game at 26 with 7:29 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next six points to lead by six points, 32-26, at the 5:50 mark.  SCSU scored 10 of the next 13 points to increase its lead to 13, 42-29, with 2:11 left, but the Lady Tigers finished the quarter on a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 11, 43-32, heading into the final quarter.
 
SCSU scored nine of the first 13 points of the final quarter to increase its lead to 16, 52-36, with 4:33 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to 11, 52-41, with 3:43 left.  The Lady Bulldogs scored four of the final six points to win by the final margin of 13. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Jasmine Coleman with 11 points and six rebounds, while Ashleigh Outler added nine points, Toni Grier added eight points and six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the two-game roadstand at Howard (5-18, 3-7 MEAC) on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
