ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior middle hitter
Gabrielle Nathaniel led the Savannah State University women's volleyball team (2-25, 2-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with 10 kills as the Lady Tigers defeated South Carolina State University (0-25, 0-10 MEAC) 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16) Sunday in Dukes Gymnasium in SSU's final match of the season.
The Ontario, Canada native also led the team with a .471 hitting percentage and added two digs, while junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 34 assists and added two service aces.
Senior libero
Alexis Washington led the team with 17 digs, while senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe added eight kills with a .278 hitting percentage, seven assists, two service aces and three digs.
Graduate student
Justice Dilworth led the team with five service aces, tied for third for the most service aces in a four-setter, and added eight kills with a .333 hitting percentage and four digs, while freshman middle blocker
Dominique Ingram added seven kills with a .357 hitting percentage and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter
Charlinda Colbert led the team with four blocks and added three kills.
Savannah State scored seven of the first eight points in the first set to take an early 7-1 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next two points to cut the lead to four, 7-3. The Lady Tigers scored five of the next seven points to increase their lead to seven, 12-5, forcing a South Carolina State timeout. After the timeout, SCSU scored the next three points to close within three points, 12-9, forcing a Savannah State timeout.
After the timeout, Savannah State scored the next point for a 13-9 lead, but South Carolina State scored three of the next four points to close within two points, 14-12. The Lady Tigers scored five of the next six points to increase their lead to six, 19-13, forcing a Lady Bulldog timeout. After the timeout, SCSU scored the next four points to pull within two, 19-17, but SSU scored six of the final eight points to capture the eight-point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
Savannah State scored six of the first nine points in the second frame to take a 6-3 lead, but South Carolina State scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at eight. The Lady Tigers scored the next three points to take a three-point lead, 11-8, but SCSU scored the next three points to tie the set at 11. SSU scored eight of the next 11 points to take a five-point lead, 19-14, but the Lady Bulldogs scored 11 of the final 15 points to capture the two-point set win and to tie the match at one.
With the score tied at seven in the third stanza, the Lady Tigers scored six of the next eight points to take a four-point lead, 13-9, forcing a South Carolina State timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Bulldogs scored the next four points to tie the set at 13. SSU outscored SCSU 12-5 during the rest of the set to capture the seven-point set win and to take a 2-1 match lead.
In the final set, the Lady Tigers scored the first seven points to take a 7-0 lead, but SCSU scored the next two points to close within five points, 7-2. Savannah State scored the next five points to increase its lead to 10, 12-2. With SSU holding a 10-point lead at 17-7, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bulldogs 6-4 to take a 12-point lead, 23-11. South Carolina State scored five of the final seven points, but Savannah State won the set by nine points to win the match.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Brianna Dafney with 16 kills, Fabiola Plaza with 29 assists and Alexis Moses with 14 digs.
