WBB Wins Home Opener; Defeats Columbia College 68-52

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss led the Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-1) with 20 points as the Lady Tigers won their home opener with a 68-52 win over Columbia College (1-2) Sunday in Tiger Arena.
 
Moss shot 7-for-13 from the floor and added six rebounds and two assists, while senior center Tiyonda Davis recorded her second 20-plus rebounding performance of her career with 20 rebounds.  Davis also added six blocks, three assists, three points and two steals.
 
Senior forward Jeremica Edwards added 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting with seven rebounds, while senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added 12 points with three assists, three rebounds and five steals.  Senior guard Rhianna Warren added seven points and three rebounds.
 
Columbia College scored four of the first six points to begin the game to take a two-point lead, 4-2, with 8:32 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State scored the next four points to take a two-point lead, 6-4, with 6:47 remaining.  With SSU holding a point lead at 10-9 with 5:03 left, the Koalas scored the next seven points to take a six-point lead 16-10, with 2:41 remaining. The Lady Tigers scored the final nine points of the quarter to take a three-point lead, 19-16, after one quarter of play.
 
Savannah State scored eight of the first 10 points in the second quarter to increase its lead to nine, 27-18, with 4:51 remaining in the quarter.  After a Columbia three-pointer to cut the lead to six, 27-21, with 3:58 left in the first half, the Lady Tigers scored the next nine points to take a 15-point lead, 36-21, with 38 second remaining, but a three-pointer by the Koalas cut the lead to 12, 36-24, at the half.
 
The Lady Tigers scored four of the first six points to begin the third quarter to take a 14-point lead, 40-26, but Columbia outscored SSU 9-4 during the rest of the quarter to cut the lead to nine points, 44-35, after three quarters.
 
Columbia scored six of the first nine points in the final quarter to cut the SSU's lead to six points, 47-41, with 7:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored 17 of the next 21 points to increase their lead to 19 points, 64-45, with 3:24 remaining in the game.  The Koalas scored seven of the next eight points to cut the lead to 13 points, 65-52, with 1:15 left, but the Lady Tigers scored the final three points to win by 16 points.
 
The Koalas were led by Amber Sherrill with 19 points and eight rebounds, Briana Johnson with 18 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the two-game homestand with Alabama State University Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
