SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel led Savannah State University volleyball team (1-21, 1-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with seven kills as the Lady Tigers fell to Bethune-Cookman University (6-18, 4-2 MEAC) 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 14-25) Friday night in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
The Ontario, Canada also added five digs, while junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 13 assists and senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe led the team with nine digs and added five kills, and five digs.
Graduate student
Justice Dilworth added five kills, three service aces and eight digs, while senior libero
Alexis Washington added seven digs.
Bethune-Cookman scored the first two points of the first set, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to tie it at two. The Wildcats scored eight of the next 13 points to take a three-point lead, 10-7, but the Lady Tigers scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 11. B-CU outscored SSU 14-5 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Wildcats scored the first three points in the second stanza, but the Lady Tigers scored four of the next five points to tie it at four. Bethune-Cookman scored seven of the next 12 to take a three-point lead, 11-9, but Savannah State scored the next three point to tie it at 11. With the score tied at 13, B-CU outscored 14-4 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
With the Wildcats holding a two-point lead, 6-4, in the final frame, Bethune-Cookman scored the next seven points to take a nine-point lead, 13-4. The Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to five, 13-8, but B-CU outscored SSU 12-6 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
The Wildcats were led by Alana Handy with 14 kills and with 15 digs for a double-double, and Phalen Clark with 39 assists.
The Lady Tigers continue their six-match homestand with Florida A&M University at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day.
