Kenyata Hendrix led the Savannah State University women's basketball team with a career-high 28 points, while junior center
Tiyonda Davis added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Tigers (6-12, 3-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated Norfolk State (0-18, 0-8 MEAC) Monday night in Echols Hall.
Hendrix shot 11-for-20 (.550) from the floor, including 4-for-8 from the 3-point line and added four rebounds and three assists, while Davis shot 6-for-9 (.677) from the field and added four assists and three blocks. Davis' 16 points ties a career-high.
Over the last five games, Davis is averaging 11.8 points per game on 25-for-39 (.641) shooting, 9.0 rebounds per game, 3.4 blocks per game and 1.8 assists per game. Over the last three games, Hendrix is averaging 22.3 points per game on 25-for-53 (.472) shooting, including 7-for-15 (.467) shooting from the 3-point line, 4.3 rebounds per game and 2.0 assists.
Davis' 10 rebounds gives her 607 career rebounds, which ranks tied for second in school history in the Division I era, while Hendrix's 28 points give her 752 career points, which moves her into seventh place in school history and her 11 made field goals moves her into a tie for eighth place with 268 career made field goals with teammate Davis.
Junior forward
Jeremica Edwards added 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added four rebounds, while sophomore guard
Lauryn Fields added six points, all in the fourth quarter, and junior guard
Rhianna Warren added five points and five rebounds.
The Lady Tigers shot 52.1 (25-for-48) from the field, including shooting 70.6 (12-for-17) in the second half, while shooting 55.6 (5-for-9) from the 3-point line. SSU held Norfolk State to a shooting percentage of 30.9 (17-for-55).
The Lady Tigers scored the first seven points of the game for a 7-0 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter, but the Spartans scored the next three points to cut SSU's lead to four, 7-3, at the 6:43 mark. The Lady Tigers stretched their lead back to seven, 12-5, with 3:27 left, but NSU scored eight of the next 11 points to close within two points, 15-13, after one quarter of play. Hendrix led the team with nine points and three rebounds during the quarter.
The Lady Tigers opened the second quarter scoring the seven points to increase their lead to nine, 22-13, with 7:22 remaining in the quarter, but NSU scored eight of the next 10 points to close within three points, 24-21, with 5:40 left. With the Lady Tigers holding a four-point lead, 29-25, with 56 second left before half, SSU scored the final four points of the quarter to increase its lead to eight, 33-25. Hendrix led the team with six points during the quarter, while Davis added five points.
With the Lady Tigers holding a nine-point lead, 45-36 with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter, SSU scored the final eight points of the quarter to capture a 17-point lead, 53-36, after three quarters. Hendrix and Davis led SSU with seven points each, while Edwards added six rebounds and three rebounds during the quarter.
The Lady Tigers scored a layup from Fields to increase their lead to 19, 55-36, with 8:47 remaining in the quarter, but NSU scored the next six points to cut the lead to 13, 55-42, with 7:15 left. SSU scored four of the next five points to increase its lead to 16, 59-43, with 6:26 left. NSU outscored SSU by a point, 10-9 during the rest of the quarter to cut the final margin of 15.
The Spartans were led by Kayla Roberts with 12 points with four rebounds and three blocks, while Siobhan Beslow added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Yazmen Hannah added nine points.
The Lady Tigers continue their four-game roadstand Saturday travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T State (9-9, 5-2 MEAC).
