GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (6-13, 3-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina A&T State University (10-10, 6-3 MEAC) 60-31 Saturday afternoon in Corbett Sports Center.
Junior guard
Taylor-Ashley Shaw led the Lady Tigers with nine points and added two rebounds, while junior forward
Jeremica Edwards, junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix and sophomore guard
Kilah Nixon each added four points.
Junior center
Tiyonda Davis led the team with 10 rebounds and with four blocks, while junior guard
Rhianna Warren and sophomore forward
Jada Young each added four rebounds.
The Lady Tigers scored the first four points of the game to take a 4-0 lead with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Aggies scored the next five points to take a point lead, 5-4, at the 5:43 mark. SSU scored the next four point to retake the lead by three, 8-5, with 2:30 left and both teams made one free throw to give the Lady Tigers a 9-6 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Aggies scored the first seven point of the second quarter to take a four-point lead, 13-9, with 6:56 remaining in the second quarter, but a Warren layup cut NCAT's lead to two points, 13-11, at the 6:44 mark. NCAT scored the next six points to capture an eight-point lead, 19-11, with 4:39 left. After a sophomore forward
Tanease Richardson's layup, the Lady Aggies scored the six of the final eight points to take a 10-point lead, 25-15, into the locker room.
The Lady Aggies started the third quarter scoring the first nine points to increase their lead to 19, 34-15, with 8:03 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to 14, 34-20, at the 5:07 mark, but NCAT scored 12 of the final 15 points to take a 19-point lead, 42-23 after three quarters.
NCAT opened the final quarter scoring the first four points to take a 23-point lead, 46-23, with 9:17 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to 19, 46-27 at the 7:39 mark. Neither team scored for 2:49 until a Lady Aggie 3-point increase its lead t0o 22, 49-27, with 4:50 left. A Nixon layup cut the lead to 20, 49-29, with 4:04 left, but NCAT scored the next five points, 54-29, at the 2:09 mark. The Lady Aggies scored six of the final eight points to take home the 29-point win.
The Lady Aggies were led by Dana Brown with 12 points, while Courtney Powell and Christina Carter each added 10 points. Powell added 12 rebounds for a double-double and Carter added eight rebounds.
The Lady Tigers finish their four-game roadstand on Tuesday against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla., at 5:30 p.m.
