Women’s Basketball Falls to Jacksonville 65-52

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the final road nonconference game of the season, the Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-9) fell to Jacksonville (8-7) 65-52 Saturday afternoon in Swisher Gymnasium.
 
Junior guard Chelsea Frazier led SSU with 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including shooting 2-for-4 behind the 3-point line, while junior guard Lauryn Fields added 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting. 
 
Junior guard Rhianna Warren added seven points and five rebounds, while junior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with nine rebounds and added six points.  Warren has recorded 28 points in her last three games. 
 
Two Jacksonville free throws gave JU a 2-0 lead to begin the game with 8:37 remaining in the first quarter.  The Lady Tigers scored the next nine points to take a 9-2 lead with 4:31 remaining.  After a Dolphin free throw to make it 9-3 at the 4:17 mark, the Lady Tigers scored four of the final five points to take a nine-point lead, 13-4, after one quarter of play.  Fields led the team with five points, while Edwards added four points.
 
The Dolphins scored the first 13 points of the second quarter to take a four-point lead, 17-13, with 6:22 remaining in the second quarter.  A sophomore forward Jada Young layup cut the lead to two, 17-15, with 5:52 remaining, but the Dolphins scored nine of the final 13 points to take a seven-point lead, 26-19, heading into the locker room. 
 
Jacksonville scored the first nine points of the third quarter to increase its lead to 16, 35-19, with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter.  A jumper by Fields cut the lead to 14, 35-21, with 6:04 remaining.  JU stretched its lead to 17, 41-24, at the 5:10 mark, but after a Frazier three-pointer and a Davis layup, cut JU's lead to 12, 41-29, with 3:51 left.  The Dolphins scored 10 of the final 12 points to take a 20-point lead, 51-31, after three quarters of play.  Frazier led the team with six points during the quarter.
 
A Jacksonville layup increased its lead to 22, 53-31, with 9:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to 15, 53-38, with 6:57 remaining.  The Dolphins scored the next four points to push its lead to 19, 57-38, at the 5:33 mark, but the Lady Tigers scored the next six points to cut JU's lead to 13, 57-44, with 4:46 left. 
 
Jacksonville scored the next five points to increase its lead to 18, 62-44, at the 3:15 mark, but the Lady Tigers scored eight of the final 11 points to cut the lead to final 13-point margin.
 
Christin Mercer came off the bench to lead Jacksonville with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while Briona Brown added 16 points and eight rebounds and Brandi Buie added 10 points. 
 
The Lady Tigers return home for a five-game homestand starting with their last nonconference game of the season against Allen University on Monday at 7 p.m.
