SAVANNAH, Ga. – Three Savannah State University women's basketball student-athletes scored in double-digit points in its final nonconference game of the season as the Lady Tigers (3-9) defeated Allen University 72-46 Monday night in Tiger Arena to snap a five-game losing streak and to begin a five-game homestand.
Junior guard
Chelsea Frazier led SSU for the second consecutive game to tie a career-high with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting, including 2-for-4 behind the 3-point line and added four steals, while sophomore forward
Tanease Richardson added a career-high with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting, and added a career-high eight rebounds. Frazier has recorded 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting (.529), including 4-for-8 (.500) behind the 3-point line and nine steals over the last two games.
Junior forward
Jeremica Edwards added 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while junior guard
Rhianna Warren, junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix and sophomore guard
Lauryn Fields each added nine points. Hendrix recorded six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while junior guard
Kilah Nixon added five rebounds, four points and three assists.
The Lady Tigers opened the game scoring the 10 of the first 12 points for a 10-2 lead with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored the next two points on free throws to close within six points, 10-4, with 3:42 remaining, but the Lady Tigers outscored Allen 10-2 during the rest of the opening quarter to take a 14-point lead, 20-6, after one quarter of play. Edwards led SSU with six points, while Frazier added five points during the opening quarter.
The Lady Tigers opened the second quarter on a 21-4 run to lead by 31, 41-10, with 1:03 remaining in the second quarter, including scoring the last 13 points. After both teams traded a made free throw, Allen scored a layup with eight seconds left in the first half to cut SSU's lead to 29, 42-13, at the half. Richardson and Frazier led SSU with 10 points each in the first half, while Richardson led the team with six rebounds.
Allen scored the first two points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 27, 42-15, with 9:36 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers went on a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 37, 54-17, with 5:17 remaining. An Allen layup and two free throws by sophomore forward
Jada Young kept the SSU lead at 37, 56-19, with 4:13 left. After two free throws by Allen to cut the lead to 35, 56-21, the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to extend their lead to 39, 60-21, at the 2:43 mark. SSU outscored Allen 5-2 during the rest of the third quarter to lead by 42, 65-23, after three quarters of play. Hendrix led SSU with five points, three rebounds and two steals during the third quarter.
After a Richardson made free throw to begin the fourth quarter to extend SSU's lead to 43, 66-23, with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, Allen scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the lead to 37, 68-31, at the 6:30 mark. Two Warren free throws extended SSU's lead to 39, 70-31, with 5:11 left, but Allen outscored SSU 15-2 during the rest of the quarter to cut the Lady Tigers lead to final 26-point margin.
The Lady Yellow Jackets were led by Jasmine Perkins with eight points and added four rebounds, while Alexxus Paige added seven points and Daquesta Croker led the team with five rebounds.
The Lady Tigers continue their homestand with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home opener against North Carolina A&T State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
