Women’s Basketball Falls to Florida A&M 59-38 to Open MEAC Play

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-8, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Florida A&M University (7-7, 1-1 MEAC) 59-38 in The Al Lawson Center to begin MEAC play.
 
Junior guard Rhianna Warren led SSU with nine points on 4-for-10 shooting with six rebounds, while junior forward Jeremica Edwards has added seven points on 3-for-8 shooting with five rebounds.  Warren has recorded 21 points on 8-for-18 shooting in her last two games against Oklahoma State and Florida A&M.
 
Junior center Tiyonda Davis recorded six rebounds, while junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw and sophomore forward Tanease Richardson each added five rebounds.
 
Florida A&M scored the first eight points of the game to take an 8-0 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter.  The Lady Tigers scored eight of the next 12 points to cut the lead to four, 12-8, with 4:14 remaining.  The Rattlers scored five of the final six points of the first quarter to take an eight-point lead, 17-9, after a quarter of play.  Edwards led SSU with four points during the opening quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to cut FAMU's lead to two points, 17-15, with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter, but the Rattlers scored nine of the final 12 points to increase its lead back to eight, 26-18, at the half.  Edwards and sophomore forward Jada Young each added five points, while Warren added four points during the first half.
 
The Rattlers scored the first eight points of the third quarter to push their lead to 16, 34-18, with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to 10, 34-24, with 4:32 remaining.  FAMU scored the next eight points to take an 18-point lead, 42-24, but a 3-pointer from Warren, gave the Rattlers a 42-27 lead after three quarters of play. 
 
The Lady Tigers started the final quarter on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 12 points, 44-32, but the Rattlers scored 15 of the final 21 points to capture the 21-point win.
 
Florida A&M was led by Alicia McCray with 15 points and added five rebounds, while Olivia Antilla added 11 points and six rebounds.  Kenya Dixon and Victoria Nguyen each added six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers stay in Florida for its final road nonconference game of the season and to finish a season-high six-game roadstand against Jacksonville (7-7) in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
