Volleyball Drops its Final Match at the Wildcat Classic to No. 16 Arizona 3-0

TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior outside hitter Christian Lyle led the team with six kills as Savannah State University volleyball team fell to host No. 16 Arizona 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-14) in the final match of the Wildcat Classic on Saturday at McKale Center.
 
Junior setter Caitlynn Masoe was second on the team with five kills and had a .455 hitting percentage, while leading the team with 11 assists and added three digs.  Junior libero Alexis Washington led the team with 12 digs. 
 
Lyle and Masoe were named to the All-Tournament Team.  Masoe led the team in kills with 15, 1.67 kills per set, hitting percentage with .250, assists with 20, 2.22 assist per set, and added eight digs and one solo block during the tournament, while Lyle added nine kills, 1.00 kills per set.
 
After Arizona scored the first point for a 1-0 lead in the first set, the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to capture a 4-1 lead.  The Wildcats scored the next two points to close the gap to 4-3.  The Lady Tigers scored four of the next six points to take a 7-5 lead, but the Wildcats scored the next six points to take an 11-7 lead.  UA outscored SSU 14-5 during the rest of the set to take an early 1-0 lead.  Lyle led the team with three kills and had a .250 hitting percentage, while Washington led the team with seven digs and Masoe added four assists.
 
After a service ace by freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second set, Arizona scored the next three points to capture a 3-1 lead.  UA outscored Savannah State 22-11 during the rest of the set to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.  Lyle and freshman outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile led the team with two each while Masoe added five assists and Washington added two digs.
 
With the scored tied at three in the final set, Arizona outscored SSU 20-7 to capture a 23-10 lead before the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to 23-14.  The Wildcats scored the final two points to win the set and the match.
 
The Wildcats were led by Kalei Mau with 13 kills and with 10 digs, Penina Snuka with 29 assists.
 
The Lady Tigers return home for its longest homestand of the season starting with Charleston Southern on Monday at 6 p.m. and The Citadel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Willcox-Wiley Gym.
