Tigers Beat SC State

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Savannah State shot 53.1 percent from the field and placed four players in double figures in a 68-57 victory over South Carolina State in a  game played at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
 
The Tigers shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the opening half and improved to 55 percent after intermission as they won their second road contest of the season.
 
SSU led 34-30 at the half and scored the first seven points of the second period.
 
The Bulldogs sliced their deficit to six but a 9-0 run by Savannah State gave the visitors a 50-35 edge with 12:18 on the clock.
 
With just over seven minutes left, SCSU pulled to within nine but another 7-0 run by the Tigers gave SSU their largest lead of the game at 61-45 with 4:31 remaining.
 
SSU, who went the final 3:12 without a field goal, led by double digits the rest of the way.
 
Terel Hall, who went 5 for 8 from the field and made all seven of his free throw attempts, led the way for the Tigers with 17 points.
 
Alante Fenner added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals while Javaris Jenkins contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Brian Pearson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Savannah State (9-19, 5-9) out-rebounded the Bulldogs 30 to 26 and did better at the free throw line (68.4 percent to 57.1 percent).
 
In the first half, the game was tied at 6-6 but South Carolina State used a 14-4 run to go ahead 20-10 with 9:10 left.
 
The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 27 with a 17-7 spurt and then held SCSU to just one field goal the final minutes of the half.
 
The first half ended with Jenkins draining a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining.
 
Karon Wright had 19 points for SCSU (10-20, 7-8) while Gabe McCray had 10 rebounds. Savannah native Greg Mortimer added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
 
TIP INS
Savannah State's Terel Hall has led the team in scoring the past five games and 15 games overall this season.
South Carolina State will finish the season with at least 20 losses for the fifth year in a row.

SSU will play their final home game against North Carolina Central on March 2.
SCSU will play at Bethune-Cookman on March 6.
