Women’s Basketball Defeats Armstrong State to win “The Battle of the Marsh” 68-61

SAVANNAH, Ga. – For the third consecutive year, the Savannah State University women's basketball team won "The Battle of the Marsh" with a 68-61 victory over Armstrong State University on Tuesday night in Tiger Arena in an exhibition game.
 
Junior Rhianna Warren led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the field, including 2-for-6 beyond the arc.  The Douglasville, Ga., native went 5-for-6 at the free throw line, with all shots in the fourth quarter, and added two rebounds. 
 
Junior Jeremica Edwards, getting her first start for the Lady Tigers, was second on the team with 16 points and shot 8-for-16 from the field.  The New Orleans, La., native added six points and two block shots.
 
Sophomore Shanikwa Buie recorded five rebounds and added nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field, while junior Tiyonda Davis added four rebounds and four points, including shooting 2-for-3 from the field.
 
The Lady Tigers recorded more field goals made (27-19), field goal percentage (44.3%-33.9%), more 3-pointers made (6-2), more rebounds (38-37), blocked shots (9-2) and steals (12-0) than ASU.  The Pirates recorded more free throws (21-8) and each team recorded eight assists.
 
The Pirates were led by Alexia Somerset with 16 points and Shermika Harris with 15 points and Brigitta Barta with five rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers officially begin its season with Columbia College on Friday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.  SSU is 4-0 against the Fighting Koalas, including a 3-0 record on opening day.
