Women’s Basketball Wins Opener against Columbia College 101-34

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a 101-34 win over Columbia College (1-5) 101-34 on Friday night in Tiger Arena.  This is the fourth season in a row that the Lady Tigers have opened with a win over the Koalas and SSU has won the last 12 season openers. 
 
Junior forward Jeremica Edwards paced the Lady Tigers with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting and added three assists and four steals in 20 minutes, while junior guard Kenyata Hendrix added 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-6 behind the 3-point line.  Hendrix also added two assists and four rebounds.
 
Junior center Tiyonda Davis added 11 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the field, and led the team with six rebounds, while adding two assists, three blocks and two steals.  Junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added 10 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field, and added a team-high six assists with four rebounds and two steals. 
 
Sophomore guard Lauryn Fields added 10 points with five assists and four steals, while junior center Caprisha Treadwell added five rebounds and six points, shooting 3-for-4 from the field.
 
Overall, the Lady Tigers shot 57.7 (41-for-71) percent from the field for the game, including shooting 42.9 (6-for-14) from the 3-point line, compared to 20 (12-for-60) percent from the Koalas for the game.  SSU had 26 assists, 12 turnovers and 21 steals, while the Koalas had nine assists, 30 turnovers and six steals for the game. 
 
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter before a 3-pointer by the Koalas with 42 seconds left in the quarter got CC on the board.  SSU led 22-3 after one quarter of play.  Edwards paced the Lady Tigers with six points, while Hendrix added five points.
 
SSU extended the lead to 33 points after a 3-pointer by Hendrix to make the score 44-11 with 1:08 left in the second quarter.  Shaw's jumper gave the Lady Tigers a 31-point lead at half, 48-17.  Shaw and Hendrix led SSU with six points each during the second quarter.
 
At the half, Hendrix led the Lady Tigers with 11 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the field, while David added seven points, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, and added three rebounds and three blocks. 
 
During the third quarter, the Lady Tigers extended its lead to 44 at 5:59 mark, 64-20, and at the end of the third quarter with the score of 74-30.  Edwards scored 12 points in the third quarter on 5-for-6 shooting.
 
The Lady Tigers outscored the Koalas 27-4 in the fourth quarter and extended its lead 67 for the final score of 101-34.  Sophomore forward Tanease Richardson and sophomore guard each added five points.
 
The Koalas were led by Kinsley Hall with 13 points, Kennyatta Gilchrist with eight points and Shahira King-Dunson and Katie Kopp with six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers start a three-game stretch against Southeastern Conference opponents starting with Auburn on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena and then travels to Gainesville, Fla., to face Florida on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. and travels to Skarksville, Miss., to face Mississippi State on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m.
