Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 8 Mississippi State 92-25 Sunday

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-3) finished its three game stretch against Southeastern Conference opponents with a loss to host No. 8 Mississippi State University (5-0) 92-25 Sunday in Humphrey Coliseum.
 
Junior guard Chelsea Frazier, who played her first game for SSU, led the Lady Tigers with eight points, while junior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with seven rebounds and with four blocks and added three points.
 
Mississippi State scored the first five points in the first quarter for a 5-0 lead with 7:44 remaining in the quarter.  A pair of free throws by sophomore forward Tanease Richardson with 6:52 remaining cut MSU's lead to 5-2.  But the Bulldogs outscored SSU 15-3 during the rest of the quarter to take a 20-5 lead after a quarter of play.  Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix led the team with three points as the Lady Tigers shot 75 percent (3-for-4) from the free throw line.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tigers 12-1 to begin the second quarter to lead by 26 points, 32-6, with 7:16 left in the quarter.  Frazier made three of four free throws to pull within 23 points, 32-9, with 5:53 remaining in the quarter.  MSU outscored SSU 15-4 during the rest of the quarter to lead by 36 points, 48-12, at the half.  Frazier led the team with four points during the second quarter.
 
MSU outscored the Lady Tigers 27-4 during the third quarter to lead by 59, 75-16, after three quarters of play. 
 
Mississippi State increased its lead to 62, 80-18, with 7:17 remaining in the final quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to 57, 80-23, with 5:04 left in the game.  MSU outscored SSU 12-2 during the rest of the quarter to take home the 67-point win. 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Victoria Vivans with 27 points, while Teaira McCowan led the team with 12 rebounds and added eight points and Kayla Nevitt added 12 points.
 
The Lady Tigers return home to face in-state rival Georgia Southern Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena before returning on the road to face Alabama State on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
