SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-4) battled with Georgia Southern University (1-3), but came up short in a 64-48 loss in Tiger Arena as the Eagles shot 60 percent (12-for-20) in the second half, including shooting 7-for-10 (70 percent) behind the 3-point line.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix led the team with 12 points and added two rebounds, while sophomore guard
Deyja Brown and junior center
Tiyonda Davis led the Lady Tigers with six rebounds each. Hendrix's 12 points gives her 589 career points, which moves her into the top-10 in school history in the Division I era. Brown added nine points and Davis added seven points and junior guard
Rhianna Warren added a career-high nine points and two rebounds. Brown's six rebounds and nine points were both career-highs.
The Lady Tigers scored eight of the first 12 points for an 8-4 lead with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter, but the Eagles cut the lead to one, 8-7, after a three-point basket. The Lady Tigers increased the lead to four, 12-8, with 3:40 left in the quarter, but an Eagle basket with 20 seconds left cut SSU's lead to two, 12-10, after a quarter of play. Taylor-Ashley Shaw led the team with three rebounds during the quarter.
The Lady Tigers increased its lead to five, 18-13, with 8:08 remaining in the second quarter after 3-pointers from Hendrix and junior guard
Chelsea Frazier and an Eagle three pointer, but the Eagles made a jumper and a three-point basket to tie the game at 18 with 6:29 remaining in the half. The Eagles took its first lead after a two-point basket, 20-18, with 5:09 left, but the Lady Tigers took a point lead, 21-20, after a basket and a free throw by Davis with 55 seconds remaining. After an Eagle 3-pointer and a Lady Tiger basket, tied the score at 23 with 20 seconds left. A jumper at the buzzer gave the Eagles a two-point lead, 25-23, at the half. Hendrix led the team with six points, while Brown led the team with four rebounds through the first half.
The Eagles made their first eight baskets of the second half, including five 3-pointers to increased its two-point halftime lead to 20, 48-28, with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Tigers outscored the Eagles 8-2 during the rest of the quarter to pull within 14, 50-36, after three quarters. Overall, the Eagles shot 75 percent (9-for-12) during the third quarter, including 85.7 percent (6-for-7) from the 3-point line. Warren led SSU with five points, and Davis led the team with four rebounds during the third quarter.
The Lady Tigers cut the lead to 12, 55-43, with 6:17 remaining in the game after a Davis basket and a three-pointer by Hendrix. GSU outscored the Lady Tigers 9-5 during the rest of the fourth quarter to take home the 16 point win.
The Eagles were led by Angel McGowan with 19 points, Patrice Butler with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Abby Hix and Alexis Sams with 10 points each.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for a six-game roadstand starting with Alabama State University on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
