Defense Carries SSU Past Campbell

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State held Campbell scoreless the final 4:46 of the game and went on to defeat the Camels 59-57 in Tiger Arena.

With the game tied at 57, SSU's Chris Martin hit the game winning jumper with 23 seconds left.

In the final 17 seconds, Campbell missed two free throws and a 3-pointer.

Campbell held a 57-46 lead with 4:46 remaining after a pair of free throws by Troy Harper.

SSU responded with 13 unanswered points that was started by a 3-pointer from Casey Wells at the 4:15 mark.

Down by two, Lenjo Kilo made a layup with 1:13 left on the clock to tie the game.

After a turnover by Campbell's Curtis Phillips, Martin drained his jumper to give the Tigers the lead.

It was SSU's first lead since leading 37-35 with 13:05 left in the second half.

Martin had a game-high 17 points as Savannah State improved to 2-0 on the young season.

In the fist half, the Tigers got off to a sluggish start, missing all four of their 3-point attempts and shooting 26.8 percent from the field.

Campbell scored the first five points of the game and led 12-4 with 16:27 left in the first period.

That sparked a 8-0 run by SSU that tied the game at the 15:09 mark.

The Camels answered with five straight points and held a 24-18 edge with 7:41 left before Savannah State closed the period with a 11-2 spurt and  take a 29-26 lead into the half.

The crowd of 1,420 saw the teams trade baskets early in the second half.

With the scored knotted at 37, Campbell put together a 10-0 run to go ahead 47-37 with 8:24 remaining.

Campbell's lead grew to 11 with 4:46 left and that is when the SSU defense shut down the visitors the rest of the way.

Kilo added 10 points for SSU while Dexter McClanahan chipped in nine points and three steals off the bench. Brian Pearson added a game high eight rebounds.

The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the second period and made 5 of 9 of their 3-point attempts.

Campbell (1-1) out-rebounded SSU 37 to 31 but made 24 turnovers.

Chris Clemons had 13 points for the Camels while Shane Whitfield scored 10.
