ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Savannah State University volleyball team (0-23, 0-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to South Carolina State University (2-11, 2-3 MEAC) 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-19) on Friday night in Dukes Gymnasium.
Freshman outside hitter
Chinenye Ofodile led the team with five kills and with three total blocks, while junior setter
Caitlynn Masoe led the team with 14 assists and added five digs and three kills.
Junior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel and freshman setter Brianna Littlejohn each added four kills, while Nathaniel added five digs and two service aces. Junior libero
Alexis Washington added five digs.
During the match, the Lady Tigers had the advantage in digs, 26-20, and service aces 6-5, while the Bulldogs had the advantage in kills, 29-24, and total blocks 7.0-3.0.
With the Bulldogs clinging to a point-lead, 3-2, early in the first set, SCSU scored eight of the next 10 points to extend its lead to 11-4. SCSU outscored SSU 7-6 to make it 18-10 before the Lady Tigers cut into the lead by scoring the next three points, 18-13. The Bulldogs scored six of the next eight points to lead 24-15. Facing set point, the Lady Tigers started a rally scoring the next three points to close within six, 24-18, but a kill from SCSU ended the set and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Ayree Gallon led the team with three kills each, while Masoe added five assists and four digs.
The Bulldogs scored the first two points to take a 2-0 lead in the second frame, but the Lady Tigers quickly tied the set at two by scoring the next two points. SCSU outscored SSU 22-6 to take a 24-8 lead, but with the Lady Tigers facing set point, SSU scored the next four points to close the gap to 24-14 forcing a South Carolina State timeout. The Lady Tigers scored the first point to take a 1-0 lead in the final stanza, but the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead by scoring the next two points. SSU quickly tied it at two by scoring the next point, but the Bulldogs took the lead scoring the next point, 3-2. SSU scored the next three points to capture a 5-3 lead, but SCSU outscored SSU 3-1 to tie the set at six. With the score tied at nine, SCSU outscored the Lady Tigers 16-10 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match. Littlejohn led the team with four kills and had a .600 hitting percentage, while Masoe led the team with seven assists and Nathaniel added four digs. SSU had more kills, 8-7, assists, 7-6, service aces, 2-1, and digs 8-6 during the set.
The Bulldogs were led by Kirby Anderson with nine kills, Melanie Williams with 23 assists and Marissa Lawrence and Brianna Dafney with five digs.
The Lady Tigers return home for a non-conference match against Mercer on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium in its only match next week.
