SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior setter
Caitlynn Masoe recorded her second double-double of the season with 23 assists and 10 digs as Savannah State University volleyball team (0-29, 0-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to MEAC opponent North Carolina A&T State University (6-11, 4-3 MEAC) 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) Friday night.
The Long Beach, Calif., native also recorded a double-double against The Citadel on Oct. 20 with 30 assists and 12 digs. Masoe added six kills with a .429 hitting percentage against the Aggies.
The Lady Tigers recorded more digs than the NCAT, 54-51, led by junior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel with 15 digs, while junior
Alexis Washington added 13 digs.
Nathaniel also added six kills with a service ace, while Tam added four kills, two assists and four digs. Junior outside hitter
Chinenye Ofodile led the team with eight kills and had a .294 hitting percentage and senior middle blocker
Christian Lyle added six kills, two service aces and three digs with a .278 hitting percentage.
The Lady Tigers scored the first two points of the first set for a 2-0 lead, but the Aggies tied the set at two by scoring the next two points. SSU scored the next five points for a 7-2 lead, but N.C. A&T outscored SSU 14-9 to tie the set at 16. After a kill from the Aggies, to tie the set at 17, to force a timeout from Savannah State, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to lead 20-17 to force an Aggie timeout. N.C. A&T outscored SSU 8-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take an early 1-0 lead. Nathaniel, Ofodile and Masoe led the team with three kills each, while Nathaniel also led the team with six digs, and Masoe also led the team with nine assists and added four digs and had a .500 hitting percentage. SSU had more digs than the Aggies, 22-20, and had the same amount of assists, 13, service aces, one, and total blocks, 1.0.
With the second frame tied at four, the Aggies scored the next three points to lead 7-4 and extended its lead by outscoring SSU 10-4 to capture a 17-8 lead. The Lady Tigers quickly scored the next four points to close within five points, 17-12, and the Aggies outscored SSU 8-7 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. Nathaniel and Lyle led the team with three kills each and also each had a .600 hitting percentage, while Masoe added nine assists and Nathaniel and Maose each added four digs. SSU had more service aces, 3-2, and digs, 13-12, than the Aggies.
NCAT scored the first six points of the final stanza for a 6-0 lead and outscored SSU 19-16 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match. Ofodile led the team with three kills, while Masoe added five assists and Washington added six digs.
The Aggies were led by Brooke Stamnes with 17 kills, Liz Martino with 28 assists and Ashley Johnson with 16 digs.
The Lady Tigers continue the three-match homestand with North Carolina Central on Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by South Carolina State, for Senior Day, on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. with both matches in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
