Tigers Defeat Hampton, Earn First Conference Win

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- Playing their first home game of the spring semester, Savannah State remained undefeated at Tiger Arena with a 68-66 win over Hampton.
 
The victory snapped a four game losing skid for the Tigers as they won their first conference game of the season.
 
The crowd of 2,755 saw Savannah State trail the entire game until Terel Hall hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left for a 67-66 advantage.
 
A free throw Alante Feener with four seconds remaining gave the Tigers a 68-66 lead.
 
Hampton's Reginald Johnson missed a 3-point attempt with one second left.
 
The win improves SSU's overall record to 5-14. The Tigers are 1-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and 5-0 at home.
 
Savannah State trailed by 10 points with 4:31 left before closing the game with a 16-4 run.
 
Hall led the Tigers with 18 points and made 14 of 17 free throw attempts.
 
Hampton (8-11, 4-3) got out to a quick start as they jumped out to a 15-4 lead.
 
SSU battled back to pull within 18-17 with 8:37 left in the half but the Pirates would not back down as they expanded their lead to 30-24 with 1:41 remaining.
 
Hampton led 31-28 at the break.
 
The Tigers trailed by as many as six for most of the second period until HU strung together a 7-0 run to increase their advantage to 62-52 at the 4:31 mark.
 
Brian Pearson had a career-high 13 points to go with his team-high eight rebounds for Savannah State.
 
Fenner chipped in 12 points off the bench while fellow reserve Javaris Jenkins contributed 10 points.
 
The Tigers shot 51.2 percent from the field and out-rebounded Hampton 27 to 26.
 
Tennessee transfer Quinton Chievous had 18 points and eight rebounds for HU.
 
Ke'Ron Brown, a Savannah native, contributed eight points, five steals and four assists for the Pirates, before fouling out.
 
The contest was also a homecoming for the Hampton Pirates radio voice Jay Lang. The Savannah native is a Beach High grad.

Savannah State: The win over Hampton was the second home win in the series for the Tigers. Savannah State defeated Hampton 112-91 in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium during the 1974-75 season.
 
Hampton: The Pirates shot an impressive 56.1 percent from the field against SSU but have lost three conference games in a row.
